Kitchener Rangers News Release

Brent Pedersen scored twice and added an assist, leading the Kitchener Rangers to a 5-1 win over the Sarnia Sting on Friday night. Josh Sterk, Evan McEneny and Justin Bailey added goals for the Rangers, who sweep their four game regular season series with the Sting.

The Rangers opened the scoring just past the five minute mark of the opening period. With the clubs playing 4-on-4, captain Ryan Murphy carried the puck to the net, where it was collected by Josh Sterk. The sophomore forward shovelled a shot behind Knicholas Dawe for his third of the season. The goal also extended Sterk's recent point streak to four games. The second assist on the play was credited to Justin Bailey.

Sarnia evened the score at 16:10 when Anthony DeAngelo's shot from the wing was redirected past John Gibson by forward Nicholas Latta. Also assisting on the German pivot's eighth of the year was Brett Hargrave.

Rearguard Evan McEneny put the Rangers back in front 1:40 later, wiring a shot from the slot past Dawe for his fifth of the year and second in as many nights. Winger Brent Pedersen assisted on the play, extending his point streak to three games. Sterk picked up his second point of the night with an assist on the play.

Kitchener dominated shots on goal 18-8 in the opening frame.

Pedersen added to the Rangers' lead late in the second, deflecting Ben Fanelli's point shot by Dawe to put Kitchener up 3-1. Defenceman Frank Corrado added an assist on the Arthur, ON native's eighth of the season and third in as many games.

Sarnia out-shot the Rangers 11-7 in the second period.

Kitchener pushed its lead to 4-1 midway through the final frame, when Pedersen carried the puck into Sting territory and bounced it off the defenceman and past Dawe. His fourth goal in three games was assisted by veteran winger Eric Ming and Corrado.

Justin Bailey added his tenth of the season with 2:36 remaining on the clock, making the final score 5-1 Rangers. Curtis Meighan carried the puck over the blueline and moved it to the rookie forward, who snapped a shot by the glove hand of Dawe. The New York native has recorded 17 points this season.

The Sting led shots on goal 11-9 in the final frame, but the Rangers finished the game with a 34-30 overall advantage. Gibson made 29 saves in his first start since backstopping Team USA to a gold medal at the IIHF World Junior Championship.

With the win, Kitchener sweeps the four-game season series with Sarnia and improves its overall record to 23-13-1-5.
