Elmira Jackals News Release
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Elmira Jackals claimed their second straight win against North Division competition with a 6-3 win over the Evansville IceMen at Ford Center on Saturday night. The win improved Elmira to 14-13-3 on the season.
Scoring in the first period came at a breakneck pace and left the Jackals playing catchup for the second straight night. The IceMen scored a pair of goals less than a minute apart as linemates Kevin Baker and Josh Beaulieu tallied at 6:35 and 7:04, respectively. The Jackals regrouped quickly, though, and answered back with a goal of their own just over a minute later. After a shot missed over the crossbar Chaz Johnson wheeled a pass to Jack Downing in the high slot and he pushed a wrist shot past Evansville goalie Paul Dainton. Downing's ninth goal of the season came at 8:22 and Justin DaCosta also assisted. Elmira's Numbers Line then teamed up for the tying goal at 10:43. Andrew Rowe finished off the 3-on-2 rush with assists from Artem Demkov and Dustin Gazley. Maxime Clermont was busy in net for Elmira as he stopped 17 of the 19 shots he saw in the frame.
The second period saw Evansville capitalize first with Dylan Clarke potting his 10th goal of the season at 6:34. He worked loose on the right wing and slammed home a rebound of a Matt Schepke slap shot. The IceMen lead didn't remain for long, as after matching roughing minors to Rob Bellamy and Brett Ponich the Jackals received a goal from Dustin Gazley to tie it at three. With Matt Campanale sending the pass to the doorstep from the left wing, Gazley cut through the slot and popped in his ninth of the season. Clermont was busy again in the second as he faced 16 IceMen shots but his 15 stops were enough to send the game into the third tied.
The Jackals then picked up Clermont by limiting Evansville to eight shots in the third and the second-year pro stopped them all. Elmira collected three goals with the eventual game winner coming off of Downing's stick 1:34 into the stanza. The IceMen and Jackals each had one chance on the power play in the third but neither was able to cash in. With the clock working against them the IceMen pulled goalie Paul Dainton with just over a minute to play. But an offensive zone turnover led to a 2-on-1 for Rowe and Bellamy and the latter picked up his fourth goal of the season with the empty netter. Louie Caporusso added his seventh of the season 13 seconds after Bellamy's goal for good measure.
Clermont earned his fifth win with 40 saves in net. The Jackals were 0-for-1 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
