Economos, Sulmonte, Score Twice in 8-1 Win over Odessa

ODESSA, TX - The Corpus Christi IceRays got back into the win column on Friday night in Odessa taking an 8-1 victory from the Jackalopes backed by two goals each from Mike Economos and Rudy Sulmonte inside the Ector County Coliseum.

Brandon Berkley started his three point night by scoring the first goal on the game just 3:02 into the game on a jam-up on the ride side of the net. Berkley and Rudy Sulmonte both poked at the loose puck with Berkley getting the last touch to take a 1-0 lead.

Sulmonte however would cash in with 4.1 left in the first period on the power-play when Wayland Williams fired a shot from the point, the winger scooped up the rebound and buried it past goaltender Nick Deery to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

To start the second, Eric Purcell grabbed a rebound and back-handed it over the left leg pad of a sprawling Deery moving the Rays' out to a 3-0 lead.

Odessa scored their lone goal of the game at 9:52 of the second frame when Lawrence Cornellier snuck behind the IceRays defense and beat Hayden Stewart to pull the Jacks' within two goals.

Then, a mistake in net by Odessa provided the IceRays with the back-breaking goal of the game. Deery came out to play the puck behind the net a tripped, allowing Mike Economos to take the puck and wrap it around into the net, unassisted, taking a 4-1 lead after two periods.

In the third Corpus Christi scored four goals starting with a Perry D'Arrisso power-play goal going top shelf on the new goalie for Odessa, Phil Heinle, for a 5-1 advantage.

The IceRays then put in three goals in a matter of 3:15 courtesy of Mike Economos (2), Rudy Sulmonte (2) and Brandon Smith providing the visiting Rays' an 8-1 victory over the struggling Jackalopes.

Hayden Stewart gave up only one goal, stopping 32 of 33 in the win.

The IceRays are on the road tomorrow night as well to finish out the series in Odessa. Puck drops at 7:05PM, coverage begins at 6:50PM with the IceRays Pregame Show on 91.1FM KSGR, ksgr,org, ustream.com, and fasthockey.com.
