Dekanich solid as IceCaps edge Bulldogs

Goaltender Mark Dekanich stopped 26 shots and Kael Mouillierat scored the game-winner as the St. John's IceCaps edged the Hamilton Bulldogs 2-1 Friday night at the Copps Coliseum.
Jason Gregoire scored his fifth goal of the season for the IceCaps with the only other tally on a night when all scoring took place in the second period.
The win was the IceCaps 11th victory in one-goal games, and means the team is now 3-1 on their current road trip, with one game to go before the Christmas break.
The teams battled hard in a scoreless first period that saw several great scoring opportunities, especially for the Bulldogs. However, Dekanich was equal to the task, making at least three solid glove saves. While the IceCaps were outshot 8-2 early in part because of a couple of Hamilton power plays, St. John's managed to get it back to 13-8 after 20 minutes.
St. John's looked like it had taken a lead early in the second period. With the play in the Bulldogs zone, Ray Sawada caught a puck that was shot in from the blueline and batted it down to the ice, and onto the stick of Ivan Telegin. The Russian rookie forward snapped it past Cedric Desjardins in the Hamilton net. However it was quickly waved off because of the glove pass.
The IceCaps did manage to get a 1-0 lead at 5:37 thanks to a Gregoire goal. The Winnipeg native was sent in on a breakaway pass by Carl Klingberg, but was unable to settle the puck down to get a good opportunity. However, the team kept the pressure up and a shot from the point by Will O'Neill hit Klingberg in the back of the leg while in front, and Gregoire jumped on the rebound.
Four minutes later, Mouillierat took a nice pass from Derek Meech with the IceCaps on the power play. Mouillierat corralled the pass and slid the puck underneath Desjardins at 9:41 for a 2-0 St. John's lead. The goal was Mouillierat's second goal and sixth point in his eighth IceCaps game and extends his point streak to four games.
Hamilton managed to get one back at 11:44 when Brendan Gallagher skated in from the blueline and beat Dekanich with a hard low shot.
The third period was all Dekanich, as he kept his teammates in front with stellar goaltending. Early in the period, he stopped Olivier Fortier from point blank range after a steal of the puck. Then about five minutes into the frame, he made a huge pad save, going side-to-side in the net to make another highlight reel save.
Dekanich stopped 26 shots in a first-star performance. Hamilton native Ben Chiarot was named the Mary Brown's Hardest Working Player.
The IceCaps now travel up the road to Toronto where they face the Marlies Saturday afternoon in a game that starts 4:30 p.m. NL time.
