USHL Update - Week Ten

December 5, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL) News Release

Climbing the Ladder ... The three wins last week for the Des Moines Buccaneers have them currently sitting in fourth place; five points out of the top spot in the west. They have won eight of their last 10 games, and are averaging 3.7 goals per game during that stretch. A large part to their success is the play of reigning CCM Forward of the Week, Christian Lampasso, who has points in seven of his last eight games, including four goals in the last three games. Also contributing to their upward bound is forward Joseph Gambardella, who has points in six of his last eight games, including four multi-point efforts.

We're Going Streaking! ... On Saturday, Muskegon Lumberjacks' defenseman Michael Brodzinski extended his point streak to six games with his seventh goal of the season in a 2-1 win over Team USA. The 17-year-old, Ham Lake, MN native has 14 points (7g, 7a) on the season, with 10 of them (4g, 6a) coming in the last six games. Another pair of hot hands belong to Lincoln Stars forward Eric Scheid, who is currently riding a five-game point streak which matches his season high. His first five-gamer came October 13th-27th. Over the weekend, the Coon Rapids, MN native registered a goal and an assist in a 5-1 win against Omaha on Friday, and notched a pair of assists in a 2-1 victory over Sioux Falls on Saturday. So far this season, Scheid has points in all but four of Lincoln's 18 games, including six multi-point games.

We are, We are...the Youth of the Nation ... First-year forward, Brian Morgan, scored a pair of goals for the Indiana Ice over the weekend. This gives him 13 on the year, and ranks him second on the team and tied for fourth in the USHL in that category. Through 24 games this season, the Windham, NH native has 13g-5a-18pts, including 6-2-8 over his last six games. Also making some noise is Muskegon's first-year goaltender, Kevin Lindskoug. The Lumberjacks' 2-1 win over Team USA on Saturday gave Lindskoug his 10th victory of the season, which is good for second place on Muskegon's all-time single season wins list. The Lumberjacks record for wins in a season by a goalie is 15.

Not-so-Long Time, no See ... Thursday's game between the Chicago Steel and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders saw a matchup between a pair of players facing off against their former teams. Steel forward Landon Smith and RoughRider forward Phillip Marinaccio were traded for one-another back on November 21st. Both scored a goal against their former team in the game. Smith scored a shorthanded goal to give Chicago a 2-0 lead at 17:18 of the first period. Marinaccio responded with an extra attacker marker with 38 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. The Steel would go on to win in overtime, 6-5.

A-OK on the PK ...The Green Bay Gamblers are tops in League at killing penalties. They have only allowed seven power play goals this season, and are leading the League with a 90.3 penalty kill percentage. This past weekend they were a perfect eight-for-eight on the PK against Indiana, and have killed 31 of their last 32 penalties dating back to November 9th. The Gamblers have a slight offensive touch while down a man as well. They are tied for second in the USHL in shorthanded goals with four after Kyle Novak netted his second shorty in Saturday's victory.

I'll Take the Lead ... When the Dubuque Fighting Saints jump out in front, they tend to stay there. They have yet to lose a game this season when leading after the first or second periods. They are 9-0-0 when leading after the first, and 14-0-0 when leading after two. This past Saturday, the Fighting Saints held a 1-0 lead after the first period, and grabbed a 3-0 lead after the second in a 5-1 win over Cedar Rapids. The Fighting Saints are currently tops in the League with a record of 17-3-1 which is good for 35 points.

Seeing Double ... Waterloo goaltender Cal Petersen tabbed his second shutout of the year with a 3-0 win over Dubuque on Saturday, giving him two clean sheets on the season. His other shutout came back on October 13th in a 2-0 victory against Omaha. Petersen's teammate, Eamon McAdam, also has two shutouts this year, making them the only goalie tandem in the USHL to have at least two shutouts apiece this season. The Sioux Falls Stampede are the only other team to have two netminders with at least one shutout apiece so far this season.

In Need of Some Home Cookin' ... Cedar Rapids has spent a lot of time on the road recently. After dropping games to Waterloo and Chicago this past weekend, the RoughRiders will have an opportunity for some more team bonding time when they head to Muskegon this weekend for a pair with the Lumberjacks. After Saturday, they will have played eight of 10 on the road. Currently they are winless in their last six road contests.

Lending a Helping Hand ... Fargo Force forward Brendan Harms dished out his 21st and 22nd assist in a pair of wins over Tri-City this weekend, and now leads the USHL in that category. The Steinbach, MB native assisted on Dominic Toninato's overtime winner on Friday to give Fargo a 4-3 victory, and notched the primary assist on Nate Arentz's third-period goal in a 5-2 win on Saturday.
