Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview
December 4, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Ice Away
The Waterloo Black Hawks host the USHL's most well-traveled team, the Indiana Ice, for two games this weekend. Sixteen of Indiana's 24 games have been on the road. The Ice have also played more total games - 24 - than any team in the league. Even in Indianapolis, Ice games aren't truly "at home;" while Pepsi Coliseum is being renovated, the franchise is splitting its schedule between Pan Am Arena and Bankers Life Fieldhouse, home of the Indiana Pacers. The matchups at Young Arena Friday and Saturday complete a four-game Black Hawks homestand. Waterloo is 8-4-0 in home games this year.
Then There Were Two
Forward John Wiitala was given the night off on Saturday when the Black Hawks hosted the Chicago Steel. It was the first time Wiitala has been out of the lineup this year. Defenseman Mark Friedman and forward Pijus Rulevicius are now the only Hawks to have appeared in all 21 Waterloo contests. Blueliner Victor Newell has actually skated in 22 games, 18 for Waterloo and four with Omaha before being traded. Last season three players - Taylor Cammarata, Eddie Wittchow, and James Hansen - played in all 60 regular season matchups.
Shutout x Two x Two
Cal Petersen's 26-save performance in a 3-0 Black Hawks victory Friday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints was his second shutout of the season. In his first appearance of the year on October 13th, Petersen stopped 25 Omaha Lancers shots in a 2-0 Waterloo win. Eamon McAdam also has two shutouts to his credit already, making the Hawks the only club in the league to have more than one goalie with more than one shutout. Only the Green Bay Gamblers and Lincoln Stars enjoyed that accomplishment last year. The Sioux Falls Stampede are the only other USHL club to have two netminders with at least a single shutout to their credit in 2012/13.
Eastern Streak Ends
Waterloo's 3-1 loss to the Chicago Steel Saturday ended a streak of eight consecutive wins against opponents from the USHL Eastern Conference. After a 4-1 win versus the Green Bay Gamblers on October 12th, the Hawks faced six different Eastern teams, defeating the National Team Development Program and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders twice in the span. Chicago and the Indiana Ice are the only clubs Waterloo did not top during in that time. Last year, the Hawks were 17-13-2 out of conference; this season they are 9-2-0.
Weekly Recap
Vince Hinostroza and Ryan Papa each recorded three points in a 3-0 decision against the Dubuque Fighting Saints last Friday. Saturday, Taylor Cammarata scored the only Hawks goal late in a 3-1 loss to the Chicago Steel. Chicago goalie Alex Sakellaropoulos made 45 saves.
