Providence Bruins News Release
Portland, ME -- The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates 5-2 Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Jordan Caron, Jamie Tardif, Zach Trotman, Ryan Spooner and Christian Hanson scored the goals for Providence. Michael Hutchinson picked up his first victory of the season.
Providence opened their first period right where they left off Friday night. Only 5:35 into the first, Caron scored his fifth goal of the season. The goal was set up by a pair of defenseman, Matt Bartkowski and the newest member of the P-Bruins Tommy Cross. For Cross it was his second assist in as many games. Off the next faceoff Bobby Robins started to mix it up dropping the gloves with Joel Rechlicz, both players leading their respective clubs in penalty minutes. Portland tied the game at one at the 15:15 mark, while on their first power play of the game. David Rundblad tallied his fourth goal of the season, while Andy Miele and Oliver Ekman-Larsson picked up the assists. The Pirates took their first lead of the game at the 16:45 mark. Hutchinson stepped out of the net to play the puck when it took a funny bounce off the boards and into the crease, where it was tapped into an empty net by Ethan Werek for his third goal of the season. Brendan Shinnimin and Rob Klinkhammer recorded the assists as the Pirates took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
During the second period the P-Bruins went on their first power play of the game when Klinkhammer received a two minute penalty for boarding. Providence took advantage of the power play as Tardif picked up a loose puck in front of the net and scored his seventh goal of the season. Torey Krug and Chris Bourque set up the power play goal. With the assist, Bourque continues to lead Providence in scoring with 14 points. Late in the period the Pirates had a great scoring chance getting the puck to the goal line where it was brushed aside before the entire puck went over the goal line. The play was reviewed and ruled no goal. The period ended in a 2-2 tie.
Portland went back on the power play early in the third period. Alden Hirschfeld got two minutes for kneeing and it led to a fight between Hirschfeld and Evan Brophey. Portland was unable to score and the game stayed deadlocked at two until late in the third period. With about five minutes to play it looked like the P-Bruins had retaken the lead with Caron's second goal of the game, but it was waived off due to goaltender interference. Providence officially retook the lead at the 3:35 mark. Lane MacDermid brought the puck into the zone and fed it to Hanson. He passed it along to Trotman, who put it into the net as Pirates goalie Mark Visentin was screened. For Trotman it was his first goal of the season and it turned out to be the game winner. The P-Bruins added two empty net goals, an unassisted goal from Spooner and a goal from Hanson, assisted by Colby Cohen, as Providence went onto the 5-2 victory.
The P-Bruins return to The Dunk on Sunday in a 3:05 p.m. matchup with the Worcester Sharks for Dunkin' Donuts Thundersticks Day. The first 1,000 fans will receive Thundersticks. The P-Bruins' complete season schedule can be found on www.providencebruins.com .
