Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs picked up a big 6-4 road victory over the Central Division rival Mississauga Steelheads on Friday night!

The IceDogs got off to just the start they were looking for in the first as they came out flying. Carter Verhaeghe would get the IceDogs started only 1:10 in, beating Mississauga starter Spencer Martin to give the IceDogs a 1-0 lead. Mitchell Theoret would extend the lead to 2-0 just past the midpoint of the period and Brett Ritchie would keep things rolling less than a minute later to make it 3-0! Steven Shipley would finish off a fantastic first period for the IceDogs, adding a fourth IceDogs goal in the final minute of the period to make it 4-0 Niagara after 20 minutes. Shots after one favoured Niagara 23-5.

The second period would see the IceDogs keep up the pressure, putting up another 20 shots, but Martin would keep the IceDogs off the board in the period and Mississaua would pick up a powerplay goal early in the period to cut the IceDogs lead to 4-1 after two. Shots after two periods favoured IceDogs 43-15.

The third period would see Mississauga battle with a pair of goals to cut the IceDogs lead to 4-3 with just over 12 minutes remaining. The IceDogs would not allow the game to stay that close for long as they would answer just over two minutes later with a Ryan Strome goal just four seconds into a powerplay opportunity to make it 5-3. Mississauga would not go away however, scoring again just 29 seconds after the IceDogs goal to cut the Niagara lead to one once again at 5-4. Mississauga would pressure IceDogs starter Brent Moran late as they looked for the equalizer, but Moran would be up to the task and Strome would add an empty netter with three seconds remaining to make it a 6-4 final in favour of the IceDogs. Final shots were 56-31 IceDogs.

The IceDogs will now return to St. Catharines to host the visiting Brampton Battalion in another key Central Division matchup tomorrow night at the Gatorade Garden City Complex. With the game not televised on TVCogeco because of the Rotary TV Auction, your only chance to see the action live is to buy your ticket now! Great seats are still available and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations!
