Sweets Sign Pitchers from Emory and Cal Poly

November 29, 2012 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The fourth season of Walla Walla Sweets baseball is fast approaching, and the front office staff has been hard at work this offseason building a roster for the upcoming year. The team has added two more pitchers to its roster for the 2013 West Coast League season, signing Cal Poly sophomore Danny Zandona, and Emory University sophomore Connor Dillman.

Danny Zandona, a native of Santa Barbara, Calif., is a 6-foot 1-inch, 190 pound right handed pitcher for the Cal Poly Mustangs. Last season, as a freshman, he saw limited playing time, appearing in seven games, striking out eight batters and walking just three in his 13 innings of work. A graduate of Santa Barbara High School, Zandona was 10-1 with three saves, and nine complete games as a senior, posting a 1.29 ERA while striking out 98 batters over 81.2 innings. Zandona was named league MVP and first-team all-CIF-Southern Section, third-team all-state, and Santa Barbara County player of the year during his senior season.

"Danny didn't see a lot of time on the mound last season, but he comes from a great program at Cal Poly," said Sweets manager J.C. Biagi. "With another year of college experience under his belt I think he will be a great addition to our pitching staff."

Dillman, a 6-foot 1-inch, 175-pound, right handed pitcher, is a 2011 graduate of Harvard-Westlake High School in California. As a senior at Harvard-Westlake, Dillman was 4-0 with a 1.68 ERA striking out 36 batters and allowing just six walks over 25 innings of work. He was named to the CIF-Southern Section All-Star team, and was named to the all-league second team. Last season for the Emory Eagles, Dillman turned in one of the top performances for a freshman pitcher in Emory history, going a team best 8-1 with a 2.84 ERA, 76 strikeouts, and 29 walks, setting freshman records for wins and strikeouts. His strong season earned him D3Baseball.com South Region and University Athletic Association Rookie of the Year honors, as well as a place on the D3Baseball.com All-South Region first team.

"As a freshman in 2012, Connor was one of the best NCAA Division III pitchers in the country," said Sweets pitching coach Mark Michaud. "He ranked in the top 25 nationally, averaging over 10 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. We are very excited to follow him this spring at Emory and then get him in a Sweets uniform this summer."

The Sweets will open their fourth season of WCL baseball in June of 2013. Season tickets and 12-game vouchers are on sale now. For more information or to purchase tickets for the upcoming year visit wallawallasweets.com, stop by the Sweets Shoppe in Downtown Walla Walla, or call 509.522.BALL.
