Rebels Win 2-1 In A Shootout Over Moose Jaw

November 25, 2012 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Red Deer Rebels News Release

A game between two teams each playing their second game in as many nights. The Warriors came in after losing 5-1 in Edmonton while the Rebels came after beating Lethbridge 2-1 in a shootout. The only previous meeting between these two teams this season saw the Rebels beat the Warriors 5-4 in a shootout in Moose Jaw on October 7th.

FIRST PERIOD

The Rebels came into the game with the WHL's number-three ranked penalty killing unit. That unit would be put to the test a couple of times in the opening ten minutes, both times they were successful.

There was sone four on four action after Matt Bellerive, much to the displeasure of the home fans, was called for goaltender interference and Joel Edmundson was sent off for cross checking. Neither team mounted much of an attack during the four on four. The first period would end 0-0 with the Rebels outshooting the Warriors 11-8.

SECOND PERIOD

The Warriors carried the play throughout much of the second period and would end up scoring the game's first goal as a result. Justin Kirsch beat Bartosak for his tenth goal of the season at the 16:09 mark. Brandon Potomak earned the lone assist on the goal. Moose Jaw racked up a whopping 20 shots on goal in the second period compared to 10 for the Rebels.

THIRD PERIOD

The Rebels showed a bit more giddyup to start the third period and it resulted in them tying this game 1-1. Mathew Dumba went top shelf past Warriors goalie Daniel Wapple for his sixth goal of the year. Turner Elson and Joel Hamilton with the assists.

This game, like last night's versus Lethbridge, would come down to the wire. So much so that extra time would be required to find a winner. 1-1 was the score through sixty minutes of play. Shots 39-25 favouring Moose Jaw.

OVERTIME

No scoring. Moose Jaw outshot the Rebels 4-3 in the extra period, 43-28 for the game.

SHOOTOUT

After each team scored once with their first three shooters an extra round would be needed. After Morgan Rielly was denied by Patrik Bartosak, Conner Bleackley whipped one past Wapple for the game winner. The Rebels, for the second straight night, won 2-1 in a shootout.
