Former Kane County Cougar Named American League MVP

November 15, 2012 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release

Former Kane County Cougar and current Detroit Tigers infielder Miguel Cabrera has won the American League Most Valuable Player Award. While Cougars alumni have been named MVP's in the postseason championship series as well as the World Series, Cabrera's honor marks the first regular season major league MVP award for a Kane County alumnus in franchise history.

Cabrera finished the 2012 regular season with a .330 batting average, 44 home runs and 139 RBI, leading all American League players in the three offensive criteria that comprise the Triple Crown. Cabrera's historic Triple Crown was the first occurrence in Major League Baseball since 1967. Cabrera also repeated his American League batting title from 2011, finished with 205 hits, and was named a Major League All-Star for the seventh time in his big league career. Last week, Cabrera won his fourth career Silver Slugger Award.

Cabrera, who will turn 30 years old in April, has belted 321 home runs in his 10-year big league career, and has a lifetime batting average of .318. Cabrera was part of the 2001 Cougars Midwest League Championship team, and made his major league debut on June 20, 2003 for the Florida Marlins, which won the World Series that fall.
