Ellis, Ericsson Named Players of the Week

October 22, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL) Des Moines Buccaneers

Urbandale (IA) The Des Moines Buccaneers' are proud to announce that a pair of first year players have received weekly honors announced by the United States Hockey League on Monday afternoon. Rookie goaltender Nick Ellis was named Reebox Goaltender of the week and first-year defenseman Marcus Ericsson was selected as the CCM Co-Defenseman of the week.

It's the second consecutive week the Buccaneers' have had a pair of teammates earn USHL honors. Last week Billy Christopoulos and Jimmy Roll were named the USHL goaltender and defenseman of the week respectively.

Ellis and Ericsson played an integral part in the Buccaneers' weekend sweep, defeating Team USA 10-1 at home on Friday and outlasting Sioux City 2-1 in a shootout on the road on Saturday.

Ellis was in net for both victories making 28 saves on Friday and another 37 on Saturday. He was also a perfect three for three in the shootout win on Saturday. The Millersville, MD native is in his first season of Junior A hockey and is 3-0-1 to begin his career. Ellis was the Bucs' first pick in the 2012 USHL Entry Draft and is committed to Providence College.

Ericsson played a pivotal role in the Buccaneers' route of Team USA on Friday night, scoring two goals in the decision. The first year USHLer from Lulea, Sweden now has three goals on the season after scoring just one in the SuperElite League in his home country a year ago. Ericsson is committed to Michigan Tech.

The Buccaneers are on a four-game winning streak and play three games in as many days this weekend beginning with a road tilt at undefeated Dubuque on Friday. Des Moines is home on Saturday against Omaha and then travels to Omaha on Sunday.

The Des Moines Buccaneers are in their 33rd consecutive season in the United States Hockey League. Since 1980, the Buccaneers have produced hundreds of NCAA Division I players and dozens of professional alumni.
