San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats announced today that they have been assigned linebacker Francis Maka, on a two-year deal. Maka, a San Jose native, spent the last two seasons in San Jose with the SaberCats. The Arena Football League's free agency period for exclusive negotiations with players from a team's 2012 roster opened on Monday, Oct. 15 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 28.

"Making sure we got Francis locked up was key," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "He will be instrumental to our success defensively in 2013 as we look to build off of what we accomplished on that side of the ball last season."

Maka (6-2, 250, Hawaii) appeared in 15 games in 2012, recording 31.5 total tackles, nine sacks, and forced and recovered three fumbles. His sack total was second highest on the team behind the new single-season AFL sack leader Joe Sykes (16.5) and was an integral part of a defensive unit that set the single-season team record for sacks with 42 (breaking the Tampa Bay Storm's previous record of 41 in 2011). The Bellarmine graduate has posted career totals of 53.5 tackles and 14 sacks in 27 career appearances, all with the SaberCats.
