Rochester's Jason Johnson to Coach in Bowhunter Cup

October 9, 2012 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) Rochester Knighthawks

With the Third Annual Bowhunter Cup set for Rochester on Saturday, October 13th, it's only fitting that the Rochester Knighthawks have the most representation in the International Exhibition Game. With the Bowhunter Cup quickly approaching, the United States and Iroquois Nationals have both announced additions to their rosters.

The United States team has added Minnesota Swarm forward Matt Gibson to replace Max Seibald. The Iroquois Nationals removed Holdon Vyse from their player roster and added former Rochester Knighthawks forward Joe Hall. Also, the Nationals named Knighthawks Assistant Coach Jason Johnson to the coaching staff.

"We are excited to add Jason Johnson to our bench for the 2012 Bowhunter Cup," said Iroquois Nationals General Manager Gewas Schindler. "He will add a lot of experience to our coaching unit. He is very familiar with our players."

Johnson has experienced quite a year, adding some hardware along the way. In 2012, he helped lead the Rochester Knighthawks to an NLL Championship. Along with coaching the Knighthawks, Johnson was an assistant coach with the Hamilton Nationals (MLL), as well as the Six Nations U-16 field team, who won a championship after an undefeated season.

He also led the U-19 Iroquois Nationals to a bronze medal at the 2012 U-19 World Lacrosse Championships. At the World Championships, Johnson was an assistant for the Iroquois team that beat the United States U-19 team for the first time in history. In September, Johnson and Knighthawks Owner and General Manager Curt Styres were named the Coaching Staff of the Year by the Six Nations Minor Lacrosse Association after they coached the bantam team to gold at the OLA Final Six "A" Provincials.

The United States and Iroquois also made some roster moves. The Americans should get an enormous amount of help offensively with the addition of Matt Gibson to their already talented team. Gibson began his professional lacrosse career playing in 2012 with the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse. He earned the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Year award after leading all rookies in points, recording 18 goals and 15 assists for 33 points. He scored in 10 of the 12 games he played in with the Lizards. Most recently, Gibson was drafted in the fifth round of the 2012 NLL Draft by the Minnesota Swarm and will begin his professional indoor lacrosse career with them shortly after playing in the Bowhunter Cup.

The Iroquois brought in Joe Hall, who played for the Iroquois in the 2011 Bowhunter Cup. He recently won a silver medal at the Iroquois Nations Cup with the Snake Island Muskies of the Quebec Sr. "B" Lacrosse League. He finished second on the team in points. In league play, Hall led the Quebec League with 39 goals and tied for the points lead with 68. The forward also played in the inaugural season of the Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax), and was a member of the 2012 Champion Ohsweken Demons. In 2011, he was a member of the NLL Rochester Knighthawks.

Both the United States and the Iroquois Nationals teams are anxious and excited to play in the Bowhunter Cup on Saturday, October 13th. Tickets for the Bowhunter Cup are still on sale and can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.com, at The Blue Cross Arena Box Office, or by calling 1-800-745-3000.
