Black Hawks Plan Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend

October 5, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL) Waterloo Black Hawks

Waterloo, Iowa-The Waterloo Black Hawks anticipate the franchise's most successful commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month ever as they take the ice next weekend in special uniforms which will be auctioned to benefit local breast cancer support efforts.

The mostly black jerseys feature a pink Black Hawks crest and matching pink sleeves, collar, and numbers on the back. White numbers on the shoulders appear over a pink breast cancer ribbon.

Backing from local Great Clips stores allowed the Hawks to order the first breast cancer awareness jerseys in franchise history. Waterloo players will wear them for the first time next Friday, October 12th, versus the Green Bay Gamblers. Then at the conclusion of Saturday's game against the Omaha Lancers, the sweaters will be auctioned to benefit Beyond Pink TEAM. The "TEAM" acronym stands for Taking action-Educating-Advocating-Making a difference. The local group offers support, encourages screening, and provides other services to breast cancer patients in northeast Iowa.

This is the seventh year the franchise has promoted breast cancer awareness in conjunction with Dr. Douglas Duven and The Breast Care Center. Representatives from Beyond Pink TEAM and The Breast Care Center will be on hand during both games next weekend with information about the importance of early detection.

"At some point, breast cancer affects nearly every family," said Black Hawks vice president of business operations Shawna Rowe. "One in eight women will be diagnosed, and regular screenings are the best way to increase the odds of beating cancer. We appreciate the opportunity to support this message once again with help from Great Clips and The Breast Care Center."

Party Town Outfitters, the official merchandise store of the Black Hawks will also be offering breast cancer awareness t-shirts and special cowbells with a pink design this month. Profits from the sale of those items will be added to money raised during the weekend auction.

Tickets for Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend and all 2012/13 home games are currently available from the Waterloo Black Hawks box office and online at waterlooblackhawks.com. For more information, call the box office at (319) 291-7680.
