Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks (2-1-0-0) were in Kennewick Sunday playing their third game in three nights, and came away with a 4-2 win over the Tri-City Americans (0-2-0-0).

Portland's Nic Petan continued his hot start to the season when he opened the scoring 13:34 into the game to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Chase De Leo then gave Portland a 2-0 lead with a power play goal at the 16:21 mark, but just 45 seconds later the Americans got within one on a goal by Lucas Nickles to cut the Hawks' lead to 2-1 going into the second period.

Petan and De Leo struck again in the second, with each registering their second goals of the game, Petan's on a power play, to take a 4-1 lead midway through the frame. Tri-Cities got back within two at the 15:27 mark on a power play goal from Mitch Topping to make it 4-2, but that would end up being all the scoring in the game, as both teams were scoreless in the third as the Hawks finished with the two-goal win.

Petan's two goals Sunday now gives him four goals and four assists for eight points through three games, tops in the WHL. In addition, Troy Rutkowski had three assists in Sunday's game, and he has six points through the team's first three games, which leads all WHL defensemen.

Brendan Burke picked up the win in net for Portland, turning away 24 of the 26 Tri-Cities shots he faced. Eric Comrie was in net for the Americans, and he finished with 32 saves on 36 shots.

Portland was 2-4 on the power play, and 3-4 on the penalty kill.

The Hawks are off now until Friday, when they host the Kelowna Rockets at 7 p.m. at the Rose Garden in a rematch of last season's first round playoff matchup.
