First Period Outburst Leads Green Bay 7-3 Past LancersSeptember 20, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL) Omaha Lancers
Green Bay grabbed the game's opening marker just 2:36 into the tilt when a three-on-two through neutral ice resulted in Novak's first goal of the preseason. Barrett Kaib earned the only assist on the even strength marker. The Gamblers doubled their lead a little over 11 minutes later when, while on the power play, Novak converted his second goal of the game off a beautiful cross-ice pass from Nick Schmaltz. Gustav Olofsson earned the secondary assist on the man-advantage marker netted 13:46 into the opening period. Green Bay then jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of goals just half a minute apart. First, Ryan Siroky cleaned up a rebound in the slot for his second goal of the preseason. Grigory Dikushin and Matthew Weis assisted on the five-on-five marker notched 18:21 into the period. Then, Nicholas Schilkey sliced through the Omaha defense before finishing with a back hander to the top of the net. Novak garnered the only assist on the even strength goal scored 18:51 into period one.
The Lancers made their first dent on the score sheet 4:35 into the second period when, while on the power play, Alex Rauter connected in the slot for his first goal of the preseason. Matt Gaudreau and Drew Melanson assisted on Omaha's fourth man-advantage marker of the preseason. Omaha sliced Green Bay's lead down to two less than three minutes later when Tyler Moy found Ryan Tait alone atop the crease before Tait executed a brilliant move in tight quarters for his third goal of the preseason. Moy grabbed the only assist on the five-on-five goal scored 7:01 into the middle stanza. The Gamblers reestablished their three-goal advantage 17:37 into the second period when Grigory Dikushin intercepted an attempted Omaha clearing attempt in the slot before one-timing in his first goal of the preseason. Weis and Siroky assisted on the even strength goal. The Lancers bounced right back though and trimmed the lead back down to two just 34 seconds later when Omaha was awarded a penalty shot, which was promptly converted by Rauter for his second goal of the game.
Green Bay put the game away with a pair of insurance markers in the third period. First, Dikushin landed his second goal of the game after a perfectly executed two-on-one with Schmaltz 6:50 into the final frame. Then, 11:29 into the third period, Willem Nong-Lambert netted his first goal of the preseason sealing the victory for the Gamblers.
The Lancers are back in action Saturday evening when they conclude their participation at the 2012 USHL Fall Classic with a 7 PM showdown with the Sioux City Musketeers.
