Sing Launch Hands Barnstormers Loss In MarathonSeptember 13, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL) Lancaster Barnstormers
The number of wins still needed by the Barnstormers to set the league record holds at four with 11 games remaining on the schedule.
With two outs in the 14th, Bryant Nelson singled to right off Joe Bateman (0-2). Shawn Williams followed with a single up the middle that sent Nelson, who was running on the 3-2 pitch, to third. Bateman got ahead of Sing, who fouled off one 0-2 pitch before crushing the home run to left center.
Lancaster had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth on a two-out RBI single to right center by Travis Denker that brought home Blake Gailen. The Ducks tied it up in the bottom of the inning. Nelson singled through the left side off Ronnie Morales to start the inning. Ray Navarrete singled to right off Jeff Bennett, putting runners at first and second with nobody out. Bennett got Sing to hit a potential double play ground ball to short, but Gilberto Mejia's relay throw to first sailed to the Long Island dugout, enabling Nelson to score. Bennett pitched out of the inning from there.
The Barnstormers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out, Mejia walked, and Gailen followed with a single to center. The pair executed a double steal, and Mitch Canham's throw to third ballooned into left, letting Mejia score. Gailen came home on a grounder to second by Fehlandt Lentini.
Long Island was shut down on one hit through 5 2/3 innings by Alan Johnson, but Ray Navarrete's bouncing single up the middle brought home Kraig Binick, who had been hit by a pitch, with the Ducks first run.
The Ducks tied the game in the seventh. With two outs and nobody on, Canham beat out an infield single behind second base. Dan Lyons moved him to third with a bloop double down the right field line. Beau Vaughan struck out Binick, but the third strike eluded Francisco Hernandez as Canham raced home to even the game at 2-2.
John Halama (13-7) will take the mound on Thursday evening in the series finale against right-hander Chris Hayes (3-0, 3-3). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:15.
