Winston Finishes Regular Season with Loss
September 3, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, VA (SEPTEMBER 3, 2012) - The Dash concluded the regular season with a 9-4 loss to the Salem Red Sox Monday afternoon at LewisGale Field.
Despite the defeat, Winston-Salem (43-26, 87-51-1) finishes the regular season with the best record in full-season minor league baseball, and the Dash won more games than all but one team in the franchise's Carolina League tenure. Only the 1950 Winston-Salem Cardinals, who went 106-47, had more victories in a single season.
The Dash will begin the postseason against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Wednesday night in Game 1 of the best-of-three Southern Division Championship Series. The Dash were 11-9 against the Pelicans this season, and Winston-Salem is aiming for its CL-record 12th Mills Cup Championship.
With the score tied at four apiece through four and a half, the Red Sox (27-41, 68-69-1) began to pull away. David Chester's solo homer to kick off the fifth gave the Sox the lead for good, and the Dash's Southern Division foe tallied three in the sixth and another in the seventh to distance itself from Winston-Salem.
Salem jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two innings. Chester's sacrifice fly plated an unearned tally in the opening frame, and a wild pitch scored Jayson Hernandez one inning later.
Dan Black drove in the Dash's first two runs of the contest. In the fourth, his RBI single pulled Winston within a run. Following Salem's two-run fourth, Black brought home a run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, bringing his season-ending RBI total to 88, which is good for second on the circuit. Then, Cyle Hankerd followed with a two-run double to knot the score, but the Dash did not score again.
Dash starter Steven Upchurch allowed two runs, one of which was earned, in his three-inning outing before turning things over to Justin Collop (9-4), who suffered the loss after allowing three runs in two innings.
Max Peterson surrendered three runs in an inning, Taylor Thompson allowed an unearned tally and retired two batters, while James Hudelson finished things off with an inning and a third of scoreless relief.
Following an off day Tuesday, the Dash kick off their playoff run with Game 1 of the Southern Division Championship Series Wednesday at 7 p.m. inside BB&T Ballpark. Erik Johnson (4-3, 2.74 ERA) will take to the mound for the Dash against fellow right-hander Luke Jackson (5-2, 4.39 ERA). An extended pre-game show begins at 6:40 on wsdash.com.
BB&T Ballpark will be the site for the entire best-of-three Southern Division Championship Series, with all three games set to begin at 7 p.m. For tickets to the SDCS, visit wsdash.com or call (336) 714-2287.
