Chiefs Fall Behind Early, Can't Catch Up Wednesday

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 9-5 Wednesday night at Peoria Chiefs Stadium. The loss puts the Chiefs at 27-38 in the second half and 62-72 on the season with five games remaining.
In the top of the first, the Kernels were first on the board. Alex Yarbrough doubled to right field and moved to third when Zach Borenstein reached on a Zeke DeVoss error. On the first pitch from Yao-Lin Wang, Andy Workman drove a double to center to bring home Yarbrough and Borenstein to put the Kernels on top 2-0.
Cedar Rapids added to their lead in the top of the second. Wang walked Abel Baker to start the inning and Kevin Moesquit followed with a double. Eric Stamets blooped a one-out single to right to score Baker and Moesquit to push their lead to 4-0. On a Yarbrough ground out Stamets advanced to second and was brought home on a Borenstein double to make the score 5-0. Workman drove in Borenstein on a single to left and the Kernels had a 6-0 lead.
The Kernels lead grew in the top of the fourth. Drew Martinez drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a Stamets ground out. Yarbrough doubled to left moving Stamets to third. The bases became loaded when Borenstein reached on a Jacob Rogers error and Stamets scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-0. On a 2-1 offering from Wang, Workman singled to left to bring in Yarbrough and Borenstein and the Chiefs trailed 9-0.
Peoria got on the board in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a ball lost in the lights. Jorge Soler singled with two outs in the inning and Chadd Krist lifted a fly ball to center. Workman lost the ball and it dropped on the warning track for a triple to bring home Soler and the Chiefs trailed 9-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Chiefs set themselves up for a big inning by loading the bases with no outs. DeVoss and Chen walked to start the inning and Dustin Geiger singled to load the bases. Soler popped up to Moesquit before Krist drove in DeVoss with a sacrifice fly to make the score 9-2.
The Chiefs got on the board again in the bottom of the eighth. Against reliever Reid Scoggins, DeVoss walked and Geiger walked an out later. Soler lined a single to left to load the bases and Scoggins was removed for Stephen Tromblee. The second pitch from Tromblee got away from Zach Wright and DeVoss scored to cut the Kernels lead to 9-3. Tim Saunders struck out but Rogers hit an infield single to bring home Geiger and a Yarbrough error allowed Soler to score and the score stood 9-5.
Wang (4-5) took the loss after pitching four innings allowing nine runs, seven earned, on eight hits and two walks while striking out four. Bryce Shafer pitched two hitless innings of relief and allowed no runs while walking two and striking out one. In three innings of relief, Pete Levitt allowed one hit and no runs with three strikeouts.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Chadd Krist (DH) - Krist led the Chiefs offense Wednesday going 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk. His triple in the fourth was the first of his professional career.
Notes: Wang allowed a career-high seven earned runs...In back-to-back starts, Wang has allowed at least six runs...Krist's triple was the first of his career...Soler has scored at least one run in the past three games...DeVoss has reached base in 19 consecutive games by either hit, walk or hit by pitch...The two runs for DeVoss puts him 10th on the Chiefs single-season list...DeVoss' 87 runs is tied for first in the Midwest League...With 82 walks on the season, DeVoss has the Midwest League lead...Wednesday's game marks the 15th consecutive game for the Chiefs in which they have played at least two hours and 30 minutes...The final homestand with the Kernels continues Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. and it's Thirsty Thursday and fans can get $1 draft beer and soda...The Chiefs send RH Joe Zeller (3-4, 3.38) and the Kernels counter with RH Arjenis Fernandez (0-1, 16.20)...The broadcast can be heard, starting with the pregame show at 6:15 p.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android.
