Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AUG. 27, 2012) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-handed pitcher Boone Whiting has been named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for Aug. 20-26 following his seven-inning shutout performance in a 2-0 victory against the Kane County Cougars last Thursday night at Modern Woodmen Park.

Whiting, 23, pitched a season-high seven innings Thursday night and allowed just four batters to reach base - two on errors and two on singles. The Cougars did not advance a runner past second base, and Whiting struck out six batters without issuing a walk. Right-hander Dixon Llorens pitched two shutout innings to complete a 2-0 victory and give Whiting his first win this season.

Whiting is the first River Bandit to be named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week since right-handed pitcher Trevor Rosenthal earned the honor for July 18-24, 2011. Two other River Bandits have already been named Midwest League Player of the Week earlier this season. Infielder Tyler Rahmatulla was promoted to the advanced Class-A Palm Beach Cardinals one week after he won the Midwest League award for June 4-10. Two weeks later, River Bandits outfielder Anthony Garcia was named Midwest League Player of the Week for June 18-24.

Whiting, a native of Oakdale, Calif., entered 2012 ranked as the No. 27 prospect in the St. Louis Cardinals organization according to Baseball America. He started the season on the disabled list for Palm Beach and was placed on an injury rehab assignment with the GCL Cardinals July 24. After four appearances spanning seven innings, Whiting returned from the injury rehab and was transferred to Quad Cities Aug. 6.

Since joining the River Bandits, Whiting has made three starts and allowed just seven hits and one earned run in 16 innings. He has walked one batter and struck out 16.

Whiting pitched the entire 2011 season with the River Bandits and struck out a league-high 14 batters in the postseason to help Quad Cities to the 2011 Midwest League Championship. In the regular season, Whiting was 5-2 with a 2.41 ERA and was second on the team with 122 strikeouts and third with 119 2/3 innings pitched.

Whiting also led all of Minor League Baseball with 0.89 walks-plus-hits per inning pitched (WHIP). He led the Cardinals minor league system in opponents' batting average (.191) and was second in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.06). He was named the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July 2011.

Whiting was drafted by the Cardinals in the 18th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft after three seasons at Centenary College of Louisiana. After being named the 2010 Summit League Pitcher of the Year and setting a program record with 256 career strikeouts, Whiting helped lead the rookie-level Johnson City Cardinals to the 2010 Appalachian League Championship.
