No-Show for Chukars Offense
August 26, 2012 - Pioneer League (PL) Idaho Falls Chukars
A recently surging offense fell back into some old, bad habits Sunday afternoon, as the Idaho Falls Chukars were shutout on just eight singles in a 9-0 loss to the Missoula Osprey at Melaleuca Field. The shutout loss was the third of the season against the Greybirds offense. The season series between the Chukars and Osprey and been a high scoring, tight affair heading into Sunday's rubber match, with the two clubs splitting their first six games while combining to score 18 runs per game. The conclusion of the series proved to be a one sided affair however, with Missoula running Chukars ace Sam Selman from the game after just three innings and Osprey starter Ross Gerdeman tossing six shutout frames.
In his first start since being named the Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year, Sam was decidedly un-Selman like with five walks and just three innings pitched. Selman actually walked in a run in the second while allowing two unearned runs and gave up another tally in the third on a solo homer by Tyler Bream.
Missoula would tack on single runs in fifth, seventh and eighth innings before pulling away with three in the ninth.
The Greybird bats, meanwhile, could hardly muster a scoring situation against Gerdeman and the Missoula bullpen. Idaho Falls ended the night with just eight singles and nine men left on base, five of them in scoring position.
Second baseman Carlos Garcia and third baseman Nick Cuckovich were the only Chukars with multi-hit nights, with both going 2-4 with two base knocks. Osprey catcher Michael Perez led his team with a 3-5 night including two doubles and two RBI.
Selman (5-3) earned his second straight loss for the Chukars while Gerdeman (4-4) picked up the win with six strikeouts in his six, shutout innings.
With the loss the Chukars (14-14) drop the series against the Osprey (16-12) one game to two while also losing the season series three games to four. Idaho Falls has an off day Monday before hosting the Grand Junction Rockies for a two game series starting Tuesday at 6:15 pm.
