Southern Maryland Tops Bridgeport

(Bridgeport, Conn. - August 22, 2012) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (19-19, 50-58) were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (23-16, 53-56) by a score of 10-3 on Wednesday at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Bridgeport is 6-10 against the Blue Crabs this season and trails Southern Maryland by three-and-a-half games in the second half Liberty Division standings.

Bridgeport infielder, Brad Boyer, had two doubles on the night and drove in a run. Luis Rodriguez drove in the other run with a single in the sixth as he had two hits on the night. Joey Gathright picked up two singles while James Simmons contributed three hits and scored a run. Kennard Jones reached base twice for the home team and Luis Lopez hit his ninth homer of the season on a solo shot to left in the eighth.

Casey Benjamin collected three hits and produced three RBI while scoring a run on Wednesday for Southern Maryland. James Shanks had a grand slam to left in the sixth. Brian Barton and Jeremy Owens each had solo homers in the victory. Barton had three hits and scored twice while Owens produced three hits and scored three times.

Bluefish starter, Matt Pike (2-6), suffered the loss as the righthanded hurler allowed eight runs (seven earned) on ten hits and one walk while fanning two. Jonah Bayliss completed the rest of the contest. In the final three-and-two-thirds frames, Bayliss surrendered two runs on two hits and fanned five.

Southern Maryland hurler, Nick Green (8-8), picked up the win as the righthanded starter delivered seven innings of two run, eight hit, one walk and two strikeout baseball. Bridgeport produced one run on three hits and struck out four times against Deinys Suarez in the final two innings.

The Bluefish finish a four-game series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with the gates opening one hour before first pitch. Thirsty Thursday is presented by Budweiser. Bridgeport will send lefthanded starter, Paul Oseguera (9-3, 2.49 ERA) to the mound against Southern Maryland righthanded hurler Gabriel Hernandez (1-0, 3.00 ERA).
