This year's squad is older and more experienced, with the average age of the players a year older than last year. The Herd have invited six high school aged players to camp and 13 players who skated in the USHL last season. Click here to view the entire roster.
The camp roster includes returning forwards Todd Skirving, Sam Rothstein and Ian Mansfield. Skirving is the Herd's top returning scorer after posting 25 points (17g, 8a) in 58 games last season. Rothstein joined the Herd towards the end of the season and put an impressive 7 points (3g, 4a) in just 12 games while Mansfield recorded 11 points (5g, 6a) in 37 games before suffering an injury.
The offense will be bolstered with the addition of veteran forwards Dennis Kravchenko, Thomas Forgione and Ryan Siiro who were all acquired in trades this off-season. Kravchenko posted 21 points in 34 games and Forgione tallied 16 points in 40 games for Cedar Rapids last season. Siiro (6'2, 220-pounds) spent last year with Dubuque where he posted 12 points in 52 games. He has already committed to play collegiate hockey at Princeton.
Some newcomers to keep an eye on include the first overall pick in the USHL draft, Tony Calderone. Calderone was the leading scorer in all of Tier I Midget Major hockey with 65 points (38g, 27a) in just 40 games. Sioux Falls native Zeb Knutson will take to the ice for the first time in a Stampede uniform as well. He was the second leading scorer in Tier I last season, recording 63 points (29g, 34a) in 39 games.
Other players include Connor Valesano who is a senior in high school this year. He spent the last three years playing at Duluth East High School and was the leading scorer in Stampede tryout camp. Cody Milan is the youngest player on the roster and was taken 9th overall by the Stampede in the USHL Futures Draft in May. He posted 22 points in 28 games with Orchard Lake St. Mary's in Michigan last season and is the brother of Daniel Milan of the Tampa Bay Lighting.
Defensively, the Stampede will have a huge veteran presence as they return Ed McGovern, Drew Brevig, Mark Solyankin, Matt Van Voorhis, Dan Carlson and Reed Whiteside. Van Voorhis (Denver) leads the way after a 16 point season. McGovern led the Stampede with 145 penalty minutes. Carlson spent time last year at forward and defense, but will start the year on the defensive side.
Charlie Lindgren, who recently committed to St. Cloud State, returns between the pipes for the Herd. He posted 9 wins along with a 3.33 goals-against average (GAA) and a .907 save percentage last year. Jan Obernesser will also see time in goal for Sioux Falls. The Stampede draft pick went 36-6-6 with a 2.07 GAAA and a .909 save percentage while leading the Brooks Bandits to their first ever Alberta Junior Hockey League title. He was named playoff MVP after going 12-2.
