USHL in Russia: Waterloo Black Hawks Split First Two Games at 2012 JCWCAugust 21, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
On Sunday, the USHL team opened with a 5-0 victory against HC Energie from the Czech Republic. Taylor Cammarata, who was last season's USHL Rookie of the Year, scored a pair of goals and goaltender Eamon McAdam stopped all 27 shots he faced to record his first shutout in a Black Hawks uniform. Defenseman Ian McCoshen, a top prospect for the 2013 NHL Draft, tallied a goal while rookie defenseman Alec McCrea recorded the first goal of the game. Veteran forward Ryan Papa also scored for Waterloo.
Just 18 hours after completing their first game of the tournament, the Black Hawks were right back at Omsk Arena to face a veteran Dynamo Shinnik team from Belarus. Waterloo fell behind 2-0 before Justin Kloos cut the lead in half with his first goal of the JCWC midway through the second period. Taylor Cammarata appeared to even the contest early in the third period, but the puck was ruled to have been kicked into the net. The Belarus team would add a goal five minutes later and the game would end with a 3-1 score. Cal Petersen made the start in net for the Black Hawks and made 23 saves.
The Waterloo Black Hawks are the first USHL team to compete in the Junior Club World Cup. The tournament features top junior teams representing ten different countries - Belarus, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Latvia, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the United States.
