With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Saltdogs recently acquired SS Wilberto Ortiz stepped into the batter's box with the go-ahead run on first base. Two pitches later, that go-ahead run - Lincoln C Chris McMurray - crossed home plate with Ortiz not far behind. Ortiz' walkoff homer was the shortstop's first with the Saltdogs in just his second game in a Lincoln uniform. The Sox led for a majority of the game and took a 5-4 advantage into the eighth inning. But thanks to clutch hitting from Ortiz and the rest of the Lincoln lineup, the Saltdog fans got to home happy.
Fargo-Moorhead 10, Rockland 1
The RedHawks pushed ten runs across in just three innings - a five-run fourth doing a majority of the damage - and defeated Rockland, 10-1. Fargo-Moohread leadoff SS Zach Penprase hit a two-run blast in the big fourth frame, one of two homers for the RedHawks on the evening. Penprase scored twice on the evening, joining LF Ryan Stovall and C Todd Jennings in leading Fargo-Moorhead in that category. Rockland's Keith Brachold hit a solo home run in the first inning to put his club on top, 1-0. But the lead didn't last long, and Fargo-Moorhead pitching held the Boulders at bay from that point on.
Gary SouthShore 11, Sioux Falls 4
RailCats C Craig Maddox drove in four of his club's 11 runs, helping lead Gary SouthShore to an 11-4 victory over Sioux Falls. Maddox was one of four RailCats batters with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 in the game. Gary SouthShore pitching held the Pheasants scoreless through eight. But Sioux Falls threatened in the ninth, plating four two-out runs. But the would-be-miraculous comeback wasn't to be, as RailCats reliever Esteven Uriegas struck out Nick Judkins to end the threat and the game. Gary SouthShore starting pitcher Morgan Coombs threw the first 6.1 innings, blanking the Pheasants while striking out four and allowing six hits to earn the victory.
Wichita 11, Sioux City 3
Six Wingnuts batters registered multiple hits Saturday night, as Wichita used a seven-run first inning to take down Sioux City, 11-3. Wingnuts RF David Peralta fell a home run shy of the cycle and scored three runs in the contest. Peralta tied for the game high in hits, going 3-for-4 and raising his season average to .322. At the plate for the Explorers, CF Yusuke Inoguchi hit his fourth home run of the year, a two-run shot in the sixth inning. The blast was the only hit of the game for Inoguchi, who also walked once in the game. Starting Wingnuts pitcher Derek Blacksher picked up his ninth win of the year, tossing 8.1 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.
Laredo 4, Kansas City 1
The Lemurs got at least one hit from every man in the lineup Saturday against Kansas City, as Laredo took a 4-1 victory from the homestanding T-Bones. Lemurs DH Palmer Karr Jr. scored once and drove in a run as one of four Laredo batters with two hits. Karr Jr. went 2-for-4 and drew a walk, raising his season average to .312. Kansas City used a Trevor Coleman RBI single to tie the score at one in the bottom of the sixth inning. But the Lemurs answered back with two of their own in the top of the seventh to take the lead for good. With the win, the Lemurs pulled a half-game closer to Grand Prairie in the South Division and now sit 3.5 games back of the AirHogs at 42-43.
St. Paul 4, Winnipeg 1
The Saints never put together a big inning. St. Paul did, however, push one run across in each of four frames, with a ninth-inning Goldeyes score the only thing separating the Saints from a 4-0 shutout. A 4-1 win would have to do for St. Paul. St. Paul starting pitcher Anthony Claggett didn't allow a run in six innings of work, picking up his sixth win of the season.
El Paso 9, Grand Prairie 9 (Completion of suspended game - Postponed - Rain - Ninth inning)
The game between El Paso and Grand Prairie, which was suspended Friday after nine innings with game tied, 9-9, was pushed another day due to rain. The Diablos and AirHogs will resume play at 1:05 Sunday, with two seven-inning games to follow.
