Red Sox sweep series; Baycats lead Royals 2-1

The Brantford Red Sox finished off the Kitchener Panthers with a 5-2 victory to sweep their best-of-seven Intercounty Baseball League semi-final series on Thursday night. In the other series, the Barrie Baycats downed the Guelph Royals 7-6 with a ninth inning run to take a 2-1 lead in their semi-final series. Game four is Saturday night in Guelph at 7:30 p.m.

In Barrie, the Baycats scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with one out when Jon Waltenbury drove in Ryan Spataro who led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Jeff Cowan.

The Baycats jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Royals answered with a six-run fifth inning, sparked by Kevin Treichel's three run home run, to take a 6-5 lead. Barrie tied the game back up at 6-6 with a single run in the sixth.

Barrie made the most of six hits on the night and eight walks by Guelph starter Rylan Pranger. Spataro scored two runs and added an RBI while Kyle Degrace and Cowan each added a single and an RBI.

Frankie Hare led Guelph with three hits while Chris Robinson and Mark Allen added two each. Allen also had an RBI.

Jamie Arneson was the winning pitcher in relief . Barrie starter Brad Bissell gave up all six Guelph runs, all earned, on five hits and three walks along with three strikeouts. Chris England pitched a scoreless 3 2/3 innings, holding the Royals to three hits and one walk. Arneson got the final out of the ninth before Barrie's winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Chris Nagorski was the loser for Guelph, pitching 1 1/3 innings and allowing only two hits and one walk. Pranger went four innings and allowed only two hits but his eight walks resulted in five runs, all earned. Bryan Boudreau went three innings and allowed only one run on two hits along with three strikeouts.

In Kitchener, the Red Sox jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the strength of Steve Lewis' RBI double in the second inning followed by Josh McCurdy's two run home run in the fifth.

The Panthers replied with a single run in the fifth when Luke Baker singled home Darnell Duckett who had doubled. Kitchener narrowed Brantford's lead to 4-2 when Mike Andrulis singled home Iggy Villalobos who also had doubled.

Scott Thorman rounded out the Brantford scoring with a solo home run in the eighth inning. The homer was Thorman's fourth of the series along with eight RBI's.

Terrell Alliman had two hits for Brantford while Baker and Villalobos each had two hits for Kitchener.

Nathan Forer was the winning pitcher, hurling seven innings and allowing both Kitchener runs, only one earned, while giving up eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Brad Hogeterp and Stefan Strecker each pitched an inning to finish up with Strecker earning the save.

Mike McGillivray put in a strong effort for Kitchener, allowing only six hits for four runs, all earned, with two walks and three strikeouts. Ryan Schwenn threw the final two innings, allowing Thorman's home run.
