August 16, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL) Stockton Thunder
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League, and head coach Matt Thomas announced today the team has re-signed rookie goaltender Cody Reichard (RIGH-card). Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.Reichard, 25, returns to the Thunder after a stint on the club's roster during the 2012 Kelly Cup Playoffs when he was signed under emergency conditions.
"Cody comes to the Thunder with a proven track record from one of the elite college hockey programs in the nation over the last five years," said Thomas. "His skill set and credentials make him a very promising pro prospect. After having an opportunity to get a good look at him during the playoffs last year, we feel confident in his ability to help stabilize our goaltending depth heading into the upcoming season."
The 5-foot-11 and 165 pound goaltender backed up Olivier Roy during the first five games of the playoffs and previously closed out a decorated four year career in college in Oxford, Ohio at Miami University (NCAA). He went 53-24-9 in 92 career games for the RedHawks with a 2.10 goals against average, .912 save percentage and tied the program record with 12 career shutouts.
Reichard was 9-7-2 with a 2.47 goals against average, .900 save percentage and two shutouts in 21 games as a 2011-12 senior.
As a 2009-10 sophomore, the Celina, Ohio native was named CCHA Player of the Year and a top ten finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, an honor given annually to the top player in college hockey. He broke Ryan Miller's (now of the Buffalo Sabres) CCHA record with a 1.23 goals against average and led the nation with a 1.87 GAA for the entire season.
Reichard was 19-4-3 with a .921 save percentage and five shutouts that season. He helped guide the RedHawks to a berth in the NCAA title game as a 2008-09 freshman.
"I'm excited to come back after getting a good feel for what Stockton was like," said Reichard. "It's a great fit, I really enjoyed being around the group of guys and the Thunder run a first class organization. I'm well aware of Coach Thomas' reputation for helping move players up and the opportunity to come back to that great environment was something I couldn't turn down."
Opening Night is Friday, Oct. 12 when the Thunder launches the 2012-13 season and the ECHL's 25th Anniversary campaign at home against the Ontario Reign starting at 7:30 p.m. at Stockton Arena.
A two time recipient of the ECHL "Award of Excellence," the Thunder led the ECHL in attendance for four consecutive seasons and drew over 200,000 fans for the seventh consecutive season in 2011-12.
