Johnson, Dash Blank Potomac for Series WinAugust 12, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL) - Winston-Salem Dash Press Release
Johnson (2-2) went seven innings and surrendered just three hits for the second straight start. The former second-round pick lost his no hitter when Francisco Soriano singled on a first-pitch fastball with two away in the sixth. Before that knock, Potomac (22-27, 53-66) had mustered only one base runner, and it was due to an error.
Johnson has posted a quality start in all five of his High-A efforts, and he boasts a 1.67 earned run average in 32 and a third innings of action with Winston. The right-hander has also whiffed 26 batters in his five games.
Powered by Johnson, J.R. Ballinger and Ryan Buch, Winston-Salem (30-19, 74-44-1) recorded its league-leading 15th shutout victory of the season. During the Dash's 4-2 road trip, the club's pitching staff posted a 1.20 earned run average over 52 and two-thirds innings.
Offensively, the Dash broke the rubber match open in the seventh. Dan Black led off the frame with a home run beyond the boards in right-center, his second long ball in as many days and his 15th of the season. On the next pitch, Cyle Hankerd yanked a homer off the pole in left for his 15th dinger. Winston scored two more runs in the frame to take a 5-0 advantage.
One inning later, Black doubled home Jeremy Dowdy, and Michael Earley brought home Black with a single to cap the Dash's offensive efforts.
For the second time in four days, Earley matched a career high with four base hits, and he finished a home run shy of the cycle. Black was 3-for-4 and needed a triple for the cycle. David Herbek went 2-for-4 near his hometown of King George, Va., and drove in the game's first run with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly.
Winston-Salem finished the season series against Potomac with a 15-5 mark, which is tied for the second-most win against an opponent during the regular season since 2005. The Dash won 16 games against Lynchburg in 2010. Winston is also 30 games above .500, which matches the high-water mark on the season.
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for a three-game series with the Salem Red Sox beginning Monday night at 7:00. Winston-Salem sends Justin Collop (8-2, 3.83 ERA) to the mound to square off with fellow right-hander Miguel Celestino (7-7, 4.59 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 on wsdash.com.
