Nationals Shutout in Rubber Match against Dash

(Woodbridge, VA) - Erik Johnson threw seven scoreless innings as the Winston-Salem Dash shutout the Potomac Nationals for the second time in three games with a 7-0 victory. Potomac has dropped two straight series at Pfitzner Stadium for the first time this season.

Johnson (2-2) was excellent in his seven innings of work. He did not allow a hit until a two-out single by Francisco Soriano in the bottom of the sixth. Johnson finished the afternoon yielding three hits and tying a season-high with seven strikeouts. His ERA is now 1.67 in five starts in the Carolina League.

Johnson and P-Nats starter Alex Meyer were matching scoreless frames until the Dash finally broke through with a run in the top of the fifth. Michael Earley led off with a triple and with one out scored on a sacrifice fly by David Herbek to put the Dash up 1-0.

Meyer (2-1) suffered his first loss in the Carolina League despite a very strong outing. He allowed only one run in six innings on four hits with seven strikeouts.

The Dash blew it open against Adam Carr in the top of the seventh inning adding four more runs on five straight hits. Dan Black and Cyle Hankerd started off the inning with back-to-back home runs off Carr to up the lead to 3-0. Earley followed with a single and came in to score on a double by Michael Blanke. Herbek made it five straight hits with an RBI single to make it 5-0 Winston-Salem.

Winston-Salem continued their success against the Nationals bullpen with a two spot in the eighth inning against Joe Testa. Jeremy Dowdy pinch hit with one out and singled to right field and scored on a double by Black. After advancing to third base on a fly out, Black scored on an infield single by Earley to push the lead to 7-0. Earley was 4-for-4 in the game and scored twice.

The P-Nats begin a three-game series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. Nathan Karns (8-3, 2.06) will take the mound for Potomac while Brooks Pounders (4-4, 5.43) will pitch for Wilmington.
