Seventh Is Heaven, Leads to Victory

August 11, 2012 - California League (CalL) Lancaster JetHawks

SAN JOSE, CA - The JetHawks scored four runs in the seventh inning on Friday night to break the game open and propel them to a 7-3 victory over the San Jose Giants in the series opener at Municipal Stadium.

Up 3-0 going into the inning, Lancaster started the inning with two groundball singles courtesy of Roberto Peña and Andrew Aplin to knock starter Jack Snodgrass (10-5) out of the game. Delino DeShields Jr., making his Cal League debut after being promoted from Lexington earlier in the day, tried to sacrifice the runners over against new pitcher Stephen Harrold but ended up bunting for a hit to load the bases.

Alex Todd put the JetHawks up by five with a line drive single up the middle. Erik Castro followed with a RBI hit to score DeShields Jr. and later in the inning, Todd scored on a Drew Muren's fly ball fielder's choice.

Nick Tropeano (3-3) allowed his first and only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Andrew Susac doubled in Adam Duvall. Tropeano finished with six strikeouts, one walk and allowed five hits over his seven innings of work.

Ricky Oropesa slugged a two-run homer off reliever Jose Trinidad in the top of the ninth for the Giants' final runs.

Lancaster put its first run on the board in the second inning. Domingo Santana and Muren started the inning with singles and moved into scoring position on a Telvin Nash groundout. Santana would score on a Jonathan Meyer ground ball.

Santana led off with a triple into the right field corner and scored when Muren grounded a ball to shortstop Joe Panik. Panik bobbled the ball allowing Muren to reach on an error. He later scored on a Meyer base hit.

DeShields Jr. and Aplin each made their JetHawks debuts after being promoted earlier in the day. Aplin and Kenny Long joined the club from the short-season Tri-City ValleyCats. Enrique Hernandez was promoted to Double A Corpus Christi before the game.
