Patriots Battle Back for 4-3 WinAugust 10, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL) Somerset Patriots
The Patriots rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. Johnny Drennen (5) evened the score at two by blasting a two run homerun over the right field wall. A few batters later, Colin Curtis drove an RBI single to right to put Somerset on top by a run. Corey Smith capped off the rally with an RBI base hit to give the Patriots the two run advantage.
Southern Maryland got on the board in the top of the second inning after Richard Mercado doubled and scored on an RBI groundout by Matt Padgett for the 1-0 lead.
The Blue Crabs added a run in the seventh on a solo homerun by Mercado (5) to make the score 2-0.
Southern Maryland scored a run in the ninth on a solo homerun by Jesse Gutierrez (2) for the 4-3 final.
Somerset starter Roy Merritt (6-6) got the win, allowing two runs in seven innings while striking out six. Blue Crabs reliever Charlie Manning (4-4) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on two-thirds of an inning of work. Andrew Dobies came on to pitch the ninth for the Patriots to pick up his fourth save of the season.
The 2012 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Saturday night when the Patriots take on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in a double-header beginning at 5:05 pm.
