Carolina Diamonds fall to USSSA Pride 9-0August 10, 2012 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) Carolina Diamonds
In the top of the first inning Sandburg drove Watley in with a hit to second while Kretschman's hit to the pitcher brought Lowe in to score the second run for the Pride to put them up 2-0.
It was a quiet second inning for both teams but in the third inning Watley and Lowe scored again when Sandburg got a hit past the second baseman. Duran proceeded to top off the inning by sending Mendoza home making it 5-0.
In the fifth, Sandberg started the inning off by getting a base on balls and Kretschman followed by bunting her way on. Charters grounded to third base and Sandberg was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice. Duran reached on a fielding error scoring Kretschman. Willis fouled out and Lappin struck out to end the inning but the Pride ran the score to 6-0.
Pride continued to stretch their lead assisted by a Diamonds' error in the sixth inning scoring three. Watly started this inning off with another walk. Lowe slapped to the short stop and reached base. Mendoza drove one deep to center and it was handled by Diamonds' Lobpries but allowed Watly to advance. Lowe stole second base followed by Sandburg being walked to load the bases. Bruder was brought in to pinch-hit for Kretschman. Bruder hit one back to Bunner who took the out at first, which allowed Watley to score. Charters then hit to third base, which was being covered for the first time this Season by DiSalvatore, who threw wide to first base committing an error and allowing both Lowe and Sandburg to score giving the Pride their final 3-run inning of the game and moving the score to 9-0.
The Diamonds succeeded at holding the Pride in the top of the seventh, but were unable to score any runs in a late game attempt in the bottom of the inning. DiSalvatore started off with a walk, and then stole second base. After Folden and Locke fail to reach, Osterman issued a walk to Mejia for 2 on with 2 outs. Quiocho came up with a clutch hit with 2 strikes on her. It was then up to Hooks who couldn't bring any of the runners in and Osterman ended up with a scoreless, two-hit game.
The Diamonds return to Five County Stadium tomorrow night, Friday August 10 at 7:15 to try to even the series with the Pride.
