Omaha Nighthawks News Release

OMAHA, Aug. 9 - Bart Andrus is the new head coach of the United Football League's Omaha Nighthawks, the team announced at a news conference Thursday. He replaces former head coach Joe Moglia, who currently is the head football coach at Coastal Carolina University.

Andrus, who served as the team's offensive coordinator during the 2011 season, brings to Omaha nearly 30 years of coaching experience. He has coached in five championship games at the professional level.

"We're really happy to be up and running again in Omaha, because I feel this is a great city and a great state," Andrus said. "The people here have been unbelievably supportive and forgiving, especially with the way the season went last year. We really appreciate that, and we hope to see them all out again."

Prior to joining the Nighthawks, Andrus spent one season as the head coach of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League in 2009. From 2001 to 2007, he served as the head coach of the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe, leading the team to two World Bowl championship berths. In 2005, Andrus was named NFL Europe Coach of the Year after the Admirals won their first championship title in franchise history.

Andrus spent a total of four seasons with the Tennessee Titans as a quarterbacks coach and offensive assistant, helping former NFL great Steve McNair lead the team to Super Bowl XXXIV.

Other quarterbacks coached by Andrus include Neil O'Donnell, Dave Krieg, Danny Wuerffel, Shaun Hill, Kurt Kittner, Gibran Hamdan, Clint Stoerner, and Drew Olsen.

Last season, Andrus developed an offensive team that led the league in total passing yards. He hopes to build on that success this year.

"We have talked to Troy Smith, and he does have some interest in possibly returning," Andrus said. "Anytime you have continuity from one season to another - with a quarterback, in particular -that's going to go a long way toward improving on numbers for the next season."

The Nighthawks open the 2012 season at home Friday, Sept. 21, against the defending champion Virginia Destroyers. Information about season ticket renewals and new sales will be available soon.
