August 7 Joliet Slammers Game NotesAugust 7, 2012 - Frontier League (FL) Joliet Slammers
Tuesday, August 7 - 7:05 p.m. CT
Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL
Game #73 - Home Game #37 (30-42), (13-23)
RHP #27 Matt Sommo (0-3, 4.15 ERA) vs. LHP #12 Jon Jones (0-0, 3.68 ERA)
Last time out.
The Slammers swept the Boomers in their three game series with an 11-6 victory Sunday afternoon. Joliet tallied 17 hits in the contest, the most they've recorded in a single game this season. Schaumburg had a 3-1 lead until Josh Lyon homered in the fourth to tie the game. Schaumburg grabbed a 4-3 lead in the fourth but Joliet responded with RBI singles from David Fox and Lyon to take a 5-4 edge in the sixth. Joliet tacked on three more runs in the seventh on RB singles from Kyle Maunus and Fox. A wild pitch made the score 8-4. The Boomers got two runs back in the bottom of the frame on a home run but Joliet scored three times in the ninth to run away with the game. Chase Doremus picked up the win out of the bullpen and Amalio Diaz notched the save. Diaz also recorded his first professional hit in the ninth on an infield single.
Matt Sommo is making his third start for the Slammers this season. He got a no-decision in his most recent start on August 1 in Evansville. Sommo went six innings, giving up three runs on three hits, walking four and striking out three. Sommo began the 2012 season with the Sioux Falls Pheasants of the American Association. He most recently pitched for the defunct London Rippers. Six of the position players on the Road Warriors played for the Rippers so Sommo will be facing a number of ex-teammates tonight. He played his college ball at Division II University of New Haven where he led all team starters in 2011 with a 4-1 record and a miniscule 1.29 ERA. Sommo struck out 38 batters in 49 innings while walking just 12. Over his career he carried a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 3-to-1.
We're going streaking!
The Slammers' current three-game winning streak is their longest winning streak since May 29-June 2 when they won five in a row.
The Slammers have the worst home record in the Frontier League at 13-23. They are looking for their first home series victory since before the All-Star Break (July 6-8 against Normal).
Better when the game is close.
The Slammers have a record of 19-17 when the game is decided by two runs or less. They are 11-25 when the game is decided by three runs or more.
Walk this way.
Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 44 walks this season, good for 5th in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 29 times in 245 at bats.
First inning success..
The Slammers have scored 50 runs in the first inning, most of any inning this season.
Leading after six.
Despite their struggles in 2012, Joliet is still 19-4 when leading after six innings.
Last season Joliet native Ryan Quigley set the Frontier League's single-season record with 28 saves. Quigley is now in the Padres organization but former Angels farmhand Amalio Diaz has picked up right where Quigley left off. Diaz is second in the league with 18 saves in 19 attempts.
The Slammers are 10-30 in games when they make an error. They are 20-12 in games when they do not make an error.
Placed LHP Justin Albert on the 7-Day DL and activated RHP Brian Smith. Transferred RHP Jake Renshaw to the 60-Day DL. Signed RHP Rey Cotilla.
