Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of July 30th through August 5th:Bowie Baysox shortstop Manny Machado has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of July 30th-August 5th. The 6'3", 185 lb. slugger batted .476 (10-for-21) with two doubles, one triple, one home run, five runs scored, three RBI, one stolen base and a .810 slugging percentage in five games for the Baysox last week. Manny, who is a native of Miami, Florida, reached base in all five games he played in last week and had three multiple hit games. One of those multiple hit games was on Saturday when Machado hit for the cycle in an 8-7 win over the Trenton Thunder at Prince George's Stadium. He completed the cycle by hitting a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. The 20-year old ranked among the weekly league leaders in triples (1-tied 1st), OPS (1.286-2nd), hits (10-tied 2nd), batting average (.476-tied 3rd), total bases (17-tied 4th), slugging percentage (.810-5th), extra-base hits (4-tied 5th), runs scored (5-tied 7th), steals (1-tied 8th), on-base percentage (.476-9th) and home runs (1-tied 10th). Manny was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round of the 2010 draft with the third overall pick after hitting .639 with 12 homers, 56 RBI, 43 runs scored and 17 stolen bases as a senior at Brito Private High School in Miami, Florida.
Michael Kickham, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 30th-August 5th. The 23-year old started one game for the Flying Squirrels last week and had a record of 1-0 with 12 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Kickham, who is a native of Springfield, Missouri, made his lone appearance of the week on Thursday night and pitched 8.1 shutout innings in a 2-0 victory over the visiting Reading Phillies. He surrendered just three hits and one walk while striking out a career-high 12 batters. The 6'4", 205 lb. hurler led all Eastern League pitchers last week with his 12 strikeouts. He also ranked among the weekly league leaders in ERA (0.00-tied 1st), WHIP (0.48-3rd), wins (1-tied 3rd), batting average against (.115-4th) and innings pitched (8.1-8th). Michael, who has a record of 9-8 in 22 starts for the Flying Squirrels this season and currently ranks second in the league in batting average against (.220), third in ERA (2.76) and fourth in strikeouts (105), was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the sixth round of the 2010 draft after posting a record of 4-9 with 103 strikeouts and a 5.25 ERA over 96 innings of as a draft eligible sophomore at Missouri State University.
