Goodwin Blasts Senators to 1-0 Win
August 4, 2012 - Eastern League (EL) Harrisburg Senators
Saturday night used terrific pitching and one big swing leading them to a 1-0 win over Richmond. Ryan Perry pitched seven shutout innings combining with winning pitcher Pat McCoy and Hector Nelo to shutout Richmond on just six hits. Brian Goodwin provided all the offense the Sens would need, driving a 2-1 pitch onto the boardwalk in right center field with two outs in the eighth giving the Senators the only run they would need.Ryan Perry and Chris Gloor pitched an old-fashioned pitchers' duel for seven innings. Richmond had their lead off batters reach in the second and third innings, but Perry immediately delivered double play balls to end the threats. Richmond had a two-out single in the fourth but nothing came of it. They put two on and two outs in the fifth, but Perry struck out Gloor to end the threat. Juan Perez singled in the sixth with one-out but he was left stranded at second.
In the eighth with Gary Brown at first base and two outs, Jonny Tucker made a terrific diving catch taking away extra bases from Juan Perez to end the inning.
The Senators, meanwhile, had a couple of scoring opportunities. Devin Ivany drew a leadoff walk in the third, moved to second with two outs, and was left stranded. Justin Bloxom doubled in the fifth to lead off the inning but was left stranded at third when Ryan Perry struck out to end the inning.
This all set the stage for Brian Goodwin to be the hero, launching his third home run for the Senators with two outs in the eighth.
Hector Nelo pitched a perfect ninth, inducing Russ Mitchell into a game ending ground out to earn his 14th save on the season. McCoy won for the sixth time against just one loss.
The Senators go for the three-game sweep of Richmond on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. with LH Danny Rosenbaum on the hill. The game can be heard on 1460am The Ticket, on the Internet through the Senators website, and on all mobile devices with the iHeart Radio app beginning at 1:40 p.m. with the pregame show.
