Osprey Beat Voyagers in 13th, 3-2

August 3, 2012 - Pioneer League (PL) Missoula Osprey

GREAT FALLS, MONT. - The Missoula Osprey managed to scratch across a run in the top of the 13th inning to beat the Great Falls Voyagers, 3-2, in a classic duel here at Centene Stadium in front of 1,007 fans.

The Osprey (4-1, 22-21) scored first, as with runners on first and third, Jake Lamb grounded into a double play. Evan Marzilli, who led the game off with a walk, scored the run, while Danny Pulfer - who had three hits on the night - essentially distracted the Voyager defense enough to make sure Marzilli scored the run before being tagged out heading to second.

Missoula found a unique way to extend their lead in the top of the fourth inning when, with two out in the inning, Socrates Brito - who finished with four hits on the night - squeezed home Pulfer, who had doubled to lead off the inning. That extended the Osprey lead to 2-0.

Great Falls would bounce back and score against the Osprey bullpen, getting single tallies in the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game at 2-2. Michael Johnson's solo home run in the top of the eighth inning snapped a 20-inning scoreless streak put together by the bullpen, spanning seven games.

Things would stay quiet until the top of the 13th. Marzilli singled, but on Pulfer's single, was hit by the batted ball for the first out of the inning. Pulfer advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored as he beat the tag at home plate on a RBI fielder's choice hit by Lamb.

The Osprey were solid on the mound, striking out 16 batters in the extra-inning contest. Karl Triana pitched five shutout innings, Michael Rivera tossed a scoreless sixth, Chase Stevens struck out five in his two innings of work, Justin Thompson fanned three in his two innings, and Chris Thomas (1-0) pitched the final three innings, allowing just a hit while striking out five, to get the win.

Missoula would finish with 12 hits on the night - with Marzilli and Tyler Bream each collecting a pair of hits on the night, while Breland Almadova also singled for the Osprey.

The Osprey and Voyagers wrap up their three-game series on Friday night at Centene Stadium. The Osprey will send right-hander Yoimer Camacho to the mound, while the Voyagers will counter with right-hander JC Casey.

The Osprey will return home on Saturday, August 4, to begin a three-game homestand with the Helena Brewers. Tickets are available now at the MSO Hub Box Office, located at 140 North Higgins in Downtown Missoula, online at MissoulaOsprey.com and by phone (406) 543-3300.
