Turner Solid in Debut, Z's Win 2-1

July 28, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) New Orleans Zephyrs

Chris Aguila homered, and Jacob Turner allowed just two hits over five innings in his New Orleans debut as the Zephyrs claimed a 2-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs on Saturday at Zephyr Field.

Turner (1-0), in his first start since being acquired from the Detroit Tigers in Monday's blockbuster trade involving Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante, gave up just one run and struck out two with three walks.

Brett Jackson got to Turner with a leadoff home run in the second inning, his 15th of the year, giving Iowa a 1-0 lead.

The Zephyrs quickly answered back in the bottom of the frame as Aguila blasted a long ball to left field, his second in three days, tying the game 1-1.

New Orleans grabbed the lead in the fifth when Kevin Mattison and Gil Velazquez singled to start the inning. Mattison stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Mike Cervenak.

Chris Hatcher tabbed his ninth save, retiring the side in order in the ninth inning with two strikeouts, snapping the Zephyrs' nine-game losing skid in games decided by one run.

Brooks Raley (4-7) took the loss for Iowa, giving up two runs and four walks on six hits, while fanning eight, over six innings of work.

The Zephyrs and Cubs will continue the series Sunday at 6pm. Southpaw Brad Hand will take the mound for New Orleans, facing right-hander Rodrigo Lopez for Iowa.
