Quakes Crush Storm in Series-Opener on Friday
July 28, 2012 - California League (CalL) Rancho Cucamonga Quakes
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Quakes put 14 runs on the scoreboard for a second straight evening, as an eight-run eighth inning helped Rancho blow out the Lake Elsinore Storm on Friday night, 14-5 at The Epicenter.Leon Landry hit a pair of triples and had an inside-the-park home run to highlight a four-hit, four-RBI effort.
The game was actually a pitcher's duel through the first four innings, as Angelo Songco's two-run homer off Storm starter Matt Lollis broke a 1-1 deadlock in the fifth, putting the Quakes up 3-1.
Lake Elsinore capitalized on a Rancho error in the sixth, scoring a pair of unearned runs and chasing starter Angel Sanchez to tie the game at 3-3.
The Quakes took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning, as Steve Domecus doubled and later scored on a throwing error, putting Rancho up 4-3 against Yefri Carvajal (1-3). After a Charlie Mirabal single, Landry followed with what was arguably the most exciting play of the year. Landry sliced a ball into left-center field, where Storm center fielder Donovan Tate attempted to make a diving catch, but came up short. Landry circled the bases and scored when catcher Eddie Rodriguez couldn't hold on to the throw to the plate.
Quakes' reliever Jordan Roberts (7-0) earned the win, but got in some trouble in the eighth, as Lake Elsinore scored a run to chase the lefty, then tallied another against Freddie Cabrera, pulling to within one at 6-5. Eric Eadington came out of the bullpen to strike out Brian Guinn with two in scoring position to end the eighth.
The Quake offense exploded in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Joc Pederson's two-run homer highlighted an eight-run frame, putting the Quakes up 14-5.
Eadington worked around a couple of walks in the ninth to notch his 18th save of the year.
With Rancho's second straight win and Lancaster's loss at home to Inland Empire, the Quakes (14-21, 51-54) are now 4 ½ games out of the Wild Card. JonMichael Redding (6-4) will take on Matt Branham (3-1) on Saturday, as Rancho looks to make it three straight.
