Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (15-15) scored on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to defeat the Mississippi Braves 2-1 in the series and season finale at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Sunday.

Suns starting pitcher Graham Taylor threw seven strong innings as he gave up one run on five hits and walked three while striking out five. Taylor earned a no-decision after he left with the game tied 1-1. Joshua Schmidt would earn the win for the Suns as he allowed just one hit and struck out one in one inning of work. Schmidt is now 5-3 on the season with a 3.79 ERA. A.J. Ramos came in to close out the game in the ninth inning and did so by earning his 13th save of the season.

For Mississippi (10-18) it was starting pitcher Zeke Spruill who went the distance as he threw eight innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and walked one while striking out four. Spruill moves to 6-10 on the season.

Braves' centerfielder Todd Cunningham led off the ballgame with a solo homerun, his first of the season, to give Mississippi an early lead. After that, Taylor kept the Braves hitters at bay as he allowed just four hits scattered throughout his seven innings.

Jake Smolinski tied the ballgame when he singled into left field, scoring Danny Pertusati from second base in the fifth inning.

Donnie Webb once again played hero for the Suns as he doubled to begin the eighth inning and then after Jake Smolinski sacrificed him over to third base, he scored on a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Suns the go ahead run and eventually the winning run.

The Suns will be home at the Baseball Grounds July 24 - July 28, as they play host to the Tennessee Smokies. Game one will take place on Tuesday as the Suns will send pitcher Matthew Neil to the hill for the 7:05pm start.
