Cosart Shuts Down Frisco

July 21, 2012 - Texas League (TL) Frisco RoughRiders

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS-Nick Tepesch (2-2) pitched well over six innings, but a combination of 'Riders errors and strong pitching gave Corpus Christi (19-9, 56-42) a 3-0 win over Frisco (11-17, 52-46) Saturday night at Whataburger Field. Once again Hooks starter Jarred Cosart (5-5) did not allow a run against the 'Riders, working 7.2 innings of three-hit baseball.

For the second straight night, a run was scored in the first inning, however this time, Corpus took the early lead. Following a single by Austin Wates, Andy Simunic executed a successful bunt down the third baseline. Looking at a tough barehanded play, the throw of Mike Olt went over the head of first baseman Chris McGuiness, allowing Wates to advance to third. Olt was charged with an error on the play, while Jon Singleton brought his teammate the rest of the way on a sacrifice fly.

Ahead 1-0, the Hooks capitalized on two more 'Riders errors in the third. With one out, Corpus catcher Rene Garcia reached on a miscue by shortstop Leury Garcia, then moved to third on a throwing error by Olt. With men at the corners, Andy Simunic hit a ball off the body of Nick Tepesch (2-2) to make it 2-0 Corpus Christi. Overall, Frisco made three errors on the night, to tie a season-high.

In the sixth, the Hooks added a third run after Tepesch issued a one out walk to Jon Singleton. He advanced to third on a single by Jake Goebbert, before scoring on an RBI single by Adam Bailey.

The 'Riders were not able to muster any hits from the seventh inning on, as Jarred Cosart recorded two outs in the eighth before departing. Taking the baton, Kevin Chapman picked up the four out save, striking out a pair in the ninth. Despite turning in a quality start, Nick Tepesch drew the loss for Frisco. He went six innings and allowed only one earned run (two unearned) on seven hits. He walked one.

The RoughRiders and the Hooks will play the third of four games Sunday night. Tim Murphy (3-8, 6.46) will make his first start since June 14, when he outdueled Jarred Cosart and the Hooks at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Murphy will be opposed by Corpus right-hander Jose Cisnero (8-6, 3.61). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 from Whataburger Field and can be heard on KKGM 1630 AM or on ridersbaseball.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:30.

Frisco returns to the metroplex on July 27 when San Antonio returns to Dr Pepper Ballpark. To purchase tickets, fans can visit ridersbaseball.com.
