Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS -- Runs were easy to come by Saturday night as the Winnipeg Goldeyes defeated the Sioux Falls Pheasants 14-7 at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Pheasants scored their first run in the first inning, but Winnipeg tied the game in the second and grabbed a large advantage with an eight-run third inning. Luis Alen's single, the first of five RBI hits in the frame, put the Goldeyes over the top. After 12 Goldeyes batted, the lead was 9-1.
Pheasants starter Mark Michael (5-6) lasted three innings and gave up nine runs on seven hits. He got into trouble by walking three men and hitting two batters, and he struck out one in the loss.
Sioux Falls made a five-run, two-out rally and batted 10 men in the fifth inning. Al Quintana's two-RBI double capped the scoring, closing the gap to 9-6.
Sioux Falls loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth inning, but only one run scored. Cory Morales knocked in Trevor Lawhorn with a single making the score 11-7, but the bases were left loaded.
Brian Beuning (3-0) earned the win in relief of starter Rich Hawkins. He tossed the final 3 2/3 innings, striking out three and holding the Pheasants to two hits.
The Goldeyes added five more runs across the final four innings to take the 14-7 win. Chris Roberson led the charge, going 5-for-6 with two triples and three RBI.
The Pheasants offense struck for ten or more hits for the fourth straight game and three players had multi-hit performances. Jared Bolden finished 3-for-4, Nicolas went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Morales hit 2-for-5 with two RBI.
"Offensively we had a good night. Seven runs and 12 hits is great," said Pheasants hitting coach Andy Juday. "Getting hits is a positive, but we want to win the game, and that is why we're here."
The finale of the four-game series with Winnipeg is at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, at Sioux Falls Stadium. Sunday is Superhero's Day. Come meet all your favorite superheroes, including Batman, at the ballpark. Be sure to sign up for on-field activities for your chance to win tickets to go see the new Batman movie! Sunday is also a Pheasants Reading Club ticket redemption night.
