Sharks Cooked By SteamersJuly 21, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain) Wilmington Sharks
At a bandbox of a stadium with the right field foul pole only 298 feet away from home plate and the left field wall only 300 feet down the line, the Steamers blasted four home runs, including a grand slam. As a result, there were six runs scored in each of the first and third innings.
Wilmington took away the shutout early as Mel Skochdopole entered as a pinch hitter in the third inning and deposited his first hit of the season over the left field wall with two out in the third. Aaron Preston followed the home run with a walk, then came around on a consecutive hit, walk, and hit batter. However, the Sharks left the bases loaded.
After Scott Kerrigan took the mound for the first time since June 22, taking the second and third innings in relief of starter Aaron Hoover, Anthony Allende made his Sharks debut by pitching the fourth and fifth innings. He allowed one more run to make it 13-2 in favor of the Steamers through five.
Justin Livengood got the call, but lasted just two pitches. His first was inside, earning a warning to both benches. The second hit Jason Kanzler in the back, warranting an automatic ejection. Stephen Vaughan came up next and allowed Kanzler to score, making the score 14-2 in the bottom of the sixth.
Scott Coleman came up in the top of the eighth and hit the second Sharks home run of the game, sixth in total, but it wasn't near enough as the score would stay at 14-3 until the final out was recorded.
The Sharks travel return to Buck Hardee Field on Saturday for their last game before the All Star Break. For more on the Sharks, visit wilmingtonsharks.com, add Sharky Sharks on Facebook and follow @ILMSharks on Twitter.
