Perez Homer Does in Naturals

July 21, 2012 - Texas League (TL) Northwest Arkansas Naturals

SPRINGFIELD, MO- The Springfield Cardinals topped the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 4-1 on Saturday night at Hammons Field. The loss was the second straight for the Naturals.

Kolten Wong got things going in the bottom of the first inning for the Cardinals. He led off the inning with his thirteenth double of the season, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jermaine Curtis. Wong later scored when Oscar Taveras hit into a fielder's choice to make it 1-0.

Paulo Orlando got things started for the Naturals (43-55) in the top of the third inning. He led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a groundout by Yem Prades. Rey Navarro followed with an RBI single to tie the game at one.

The Cardinals' offense retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning getting a two-run home run from Audry Perez. The home run was the third of the season for Perez and put the Cardinals up 3-1.

Ryan Dennick (5-4) got the spot start on the mound for the Naturals. The left-hander went four innings allowing four hits and three runs, while striking out one. His counterpart Seth Maness (8-1) turned in a quality start for the Cardinals. Maness went seven innings, scattering six hits and allowing just one run, while striking out six.

The Cardinals (54-43) tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single from Perez, that made it a 4-1 contest. Hector Rondon worked around a hit batsman to pick up his fourth save of the season.

The Naturals will continue their four-game series with the Cardinals on Sunday night at 6:08 PM. The Naturals will send right-hander Sugar Ray Marimon (1-2, 3.90) to the mound against the Cardinals right-hander Scott McGregor (2-1, 7.50). The game can be heard on ESPN 92.1 The Ticket.
