Edenton Steamers News Release

MOREHEAD CITY, NC - Edenton (29-13, 11-5) scored three times in the top of the first and four Steamers pitchers made it stand up as the Steamers hung on for a 4-2 win over the Morehead City Marlins (14-29, 4-12) on Thursday at Puck O'Neil Field at Big Rock Stadium.

The Steamers jumped out in front of the Marlins starting pitcher Dario Santangelo in the top of the first scoring three times. Santangelo walked three of the first four batters in the inning to load the bases with one out. After Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) struck out, Wilbur Nevarez hit a sky high pop-up in front of home plate that neither the catcher Corey Bass nor the pitcher Dario Santangelo attempted to catch. With two out the ball dropped fair and two runs scored for a 2-0 Steamer lead. Madison Beaird (Arkansas Tech University) then singled home Camporeale from third for a 3-0 lead.

With one swing of the bat Ryan Cranmer made it a one run ball game with his seventh home run of the season, a two-run homer in the bottom of the second. With the long ball he tied the trio of Camporeale, Kanzler and Branigan atop the leader board in the league.

Edenton added a run in the top of the fifth when Spencer Branigan greeted Marlins new pitcher Ben Van KeKrix with an RBI single, his 23rd RBI of the season.

In the Bottom of the third with two outs and a runner at first base Reed Gordy hit a line drive single to Madison Beaird in right field. Beaird charged and came up firing. He threw a strike to Blaise Fernandez at third base in plenty of time to nail Sal Annunziata. Beaird, with his ninth outfield assist of the season sets a new franchise record for the Steamers, breaking the previous record of eight set by Justin Newman (Georgia State University) in 2004. Beaird has also thrown out a runner on the base paths in back-to-back games.

Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University) emerged from the Steamer bullpen to close out the 4-2 win. He allowed three straight singles to load the bases with no out. Edenton got a force out at the plate for the first out and then Jarrett Higgins hit a line drive right to Spencer Branigan who leapt in the air, caught the ball and doubled off the runner at first base to seal Egan's 15th save of the season. Egan, with the save ties the Steamers franchise record for saves in a single season with 15, set by Luke Demko (University of Rhode Island) in 2008.

Justin D'Amato (Saint John Fisher College) pitched five innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits and he walked two and struck out three. D'Amato improved to 3-2 on the season. Dario Santangelo took the loss pitching four and a third innings and allowing four runs (all earned) on six hits and four walks; he struck out two in the loss.

Edenton will finish the season with a 6-1 mark against the Marlins and are the first team this season in the Coastal Plain League to reach the 30 win mark.
