Sox Early Lead Evaporates in 11-8 Loss to Salt Lake

July 18, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (48-48) jumped out to an early 6-1 lead against the Salt Lake Bees (48-50) with a five-run third inning but the Bees battled back after that frame to score ten runs over the next five innings of the game to win 11-8, taking the edge in the season series six games to five.

Sky Sox second baseman Brandon Wood powered Colorado Springs' early offensive attack with four RBI in the first three innings of the game against his former team, including a three-run shot that was a part of the Sox five-run rally with two outs in the third. After Wood's homer, the Sky Sox only managed four hits the rest of the way and two runs while the Salt Lake offense scored at least one run in each of the next five innings, including a four-run fifth inning that tied the game at 7-7 at the time in the game.

With the game tied at 8-8 after the sixth inning, the Sky Sox were limited to one hit and no runs over the final three innings of the game by Salt Lake relievers Bobby Cassevah, Matt Meyer and Ryan Brasier, who earned his team-leading 10 save of the season by recording only the final out of the game. The Bees scored the final three runs of the game, with the winning margin provided on Salt Lake first baseman Efren Navarro's second RBI double of the game in the seventh and shortstop Andrew Romine two-RBI double in the eighth. Romine led the way for the Bees with three RBI in the game.

Sky Sox starter Alex White gave up his most runs in any of his nine starts this season, but matched his longest start by going six innings. White received a no-decision in the game, and has not received the win in a start for Colorado Springs since April 20 against the Tucson Padres. Before Edgmer Escalona allowed three runs in the seventh and eighth, the Sky Sox bullpen had allowed just two runs in their last 12.2 innings.

The loss drops the Sky Sox back to .500 on the season, as well as 18-16 against the Pacific Northern Division. Colorado Springs will search for the split as they send out left-hander Edwar Cabrera (2-0, 4.91 ERA) to face off with Bees right-hander Trevor Bell (1-5, 6.46 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. MT.
