Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Peoria, IL - With the tying run on second base and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Charlie Cononie struck out the final two men to secure a 4-2 win for the Bowling Green Hot Rods (14-9, 52-42) over the Peoria Chiefs (9-14, 44-48) on Sunday afternoon at O'Brien Field. Cameron Seitzer tied a career high with four hits, and Felipe Rivero was solid in three relief innings to earn the win. The victory clinches a winning road trip for the Hot Rods, who have now won seven of nine ball games.
For the second straight game in Peoria, the Hot Rods jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Jake Hager was hit by the first pitch of the game and came around to score on the first of Seitzer's four hits, a single on a line up the middle. Later in the inning, Seitzer came in to score on a wild pitch by Chief starter Zach Cates.
After the Chiefs cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Hot Rods were able to extend their lead in the top of the sixth inning. After a Josh Sale walk, a Taylor Motter bunt single, and a Tyler Goeddel sacrifice bunt, Hager lined a single through a drawn-in infield to score two runs. Hager's 42nd and 43rd RBI's of the season gave the Hot Rods some breathing room and a 4-1 lead.
The inability to cash in on other opportunities set the Chiefs up with a chance to potentially win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Cononie, who was on the mound for his third inning of relief, allowed an RBI-single to Pin-Chieh Chen. After a Zeke DeVoss walk and a steal, runners were on second and third base with just one out. However, Cononie struck out Taiwan Easterling and Dustin Geiger to end the game, securing his fifth save and the Hot Rods win.
The six-game, Western Division road trip comes to an end on Monday morning at 11:00 AM at O'Brien Field in downtown Peoria, IL. The Hot Rods will start RHP Trevor Shull (2-4, 5.29), while the Chiefs will give the start to RHP Starling Peralta (2-4, 3.14). Tune in to the game on your home for all 140 Hot Rods regular season games, WBGN-AM 1340 "The Ticket". The Forever Communications Pregame Show with Hank Fuerst begins at 10:40 AM CDT.
