Boulders' Defense Stellar, New Jersey Drops Game Four

July 14, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release

On a cool, Saturday evening in Little Falls, the New Jersey Jackals succumbed to another devastating blow off the bat off the Rockland Boulders' Phillip Cuadrado, falling 3-2.

With the game tied at two in the top of the ninth inning, Cuadrado unloaded off Jackals' relief pitcher Jake Hale for his fifth homer of the season and third of this series to give the Boulders the win.

Francisco Carraballo's 12th home run of the year to lead off the second put the Jackals up 1-0.

Three innings later, back-to-back singles by Ryan Scoma and Melvin Falu gave the Boulders their first run of the game. Cole Kraft would bring Scoma home on an RBI double to give the Boulders their first lead of the game.

One inning later, an RBI groundout by Carraballo scored Ángel Berroa to tie the game at two. Berroa reached on a leadoff double.

The real story for the Boulders was their defense. Cole Kraft made a diving, mid-air stop at shortstop in the seventh inning, saving at least one run. In the eighth with two on, an extended, over the shoulder catch in short right-center by newly acquired second baseman Jose Reyes got Rubio out of the first-and-third jam. With his team up one in the ninth inning, Keith Brachold made a game-saving catch in the bottom of the ninth, a fully-extended dive in left field to take away an extra-base hit from Chris Henderson that would have scored Guzman from second.

Unfortunately for the home squad, starting pitcher Kyle Greenwalt had perhaps his most effective outing of the season. The righty earned a no-decision in his longest outing of the season, allowing two runs on seven hits. He recorded four strikeouts.

Hale came on in relief of Greenwalt and allowed Cuadrado's game-winning home run. His first decision of the season is a loss.

Cuadrado hit two home runs in a 13-9 Boulders win on Thursday.

Greenwalt was not to be outdone by the Boulders' Bobby Blevins. The fellow right-hander worked through six-and-two-thirds innings of seven-hit ball, allowing two runs. Blevins also earns the no-decision.

Garrett Johnson and Chris Rubio combined to shutout the Jackals for one-and-two-thirds innings. Rubio earns the win and improves to 1-3. Closer Adrian Martin came on in the ninth to earn his eighth save of the season.

Chris Henderson lead the offense for New Jersey. The Jackals catcher was 3-4, as only the ninth-inning diving catch by Brachold kept him from a perfect day. Newly acquired Jackals hitters Nick Salotti and Matt Nandin have hit safely in all three games with New Jersey

With the loss, the Jackals drop to 29-24 while the Boulders return to above .500 to 27-26. Rockland is now two-games behind the Jackals for second-place in the Can-Am League standings and eight-and-a-half behind the first-place Quebec Capitales. The Jackals trail Quebec by six-and-a-half games.

The two sides will continue their five-game set tomorrow when they travel to Provident Bank Park for the finale. Steve Fox (8-1, 2.36) goes for the Jackals in search of his Can-Am League leading ninth win. Right-hander Jonathan Velasquez (3-4, 4.86) starts for Rockland. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m, with the pregame show starting 10 minutes prior.
