Barons Split Twin Bill against Smokies

Birmingham Barons News Release

Birmingham, AL - White Sox pitcher Philip Humber pitched well in his rehab appearance in Birmingham as the Barons split a double header against the Tennessee Smokies Thursday night winning game one 4-1 and falling in game two by a score of 3-0 in front of 2,150 fans at Regions Park.

Barons' starter Philip Humber got off to a rough start in game one, allowing a run on two hits in the first inning but he would settle in as the game wore on, allowing the Barons to take control of the opening contest.

The Barons would come back to take a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the innings, scoring twice on a two-run single by Brady Shoemaker and once on an RBI single by Jake Oester, knocking Smokies starter Zach Rosscup (0-1, 81.00) from the game. Ty"Rell Harris relieved Rosscup with the bases loaded and promptly walked Damaso Espino to score the fourth run of the inning.

It would be all the run support Humber would need as he retired the last 16 batters in order before giving way to Ryan Kussmaul in the seventh. Humber allowed one run on two hits in 6.0 innings while striking out five in what will likely be his last rehab start before rejoining the Chicago White Sox. Kussmaul stuck out one in a perfect seventh inning in picking up his ninth save of the season.

In game two the Smokies would return the favor, jumping out to 3-0 lead in the second as Nelson Perez legged out a two-run triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Noble. All three runs were scored against Barons' starter Cameron Bayne (6-9, 6.38) who allowed six hits in 5.0 innings before giving way to the bullpen. The Barons were never able to get the bats going against Smokies starter Nick Struck (10-8, 3.34) managing just four hits en route to their sixth shutout loss of the season.

The Barons will look to win the series tomorrow night as RHP Matt Heidenreich (1-0, 1.13) takes the hill against LHP Eric Jokisch (4-1, 3.04). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
